Yes I am sure you are right about the injected models compared with earlier ones, and I was referring to progress at less than thirty miles per hour... We had one (injected) plus 8 lock up with overheating when his fan died whilst trying to negotiate Rouen on the way to LeMans in 18 . But i was about to expire too it was showing 40 C out in the open.

I am not sure that I am correct re later lean burn engine temps, my +8 tends to top out at 90Deg C.
Even when stuck in traffic in a tunnel just outside of Naples in a Summer some years back when Italians were fainting in the street with heat stroke, I had issues with the starter relay so did not want to shut the engine down... hot exhaust on one thigh and hot gearbox on the other for both my good lady and I.... Suggesting I was about to put the heater on to assist engine cooling did not go down well with my passenger... ! Reluctant to type this but fortunately .... my +8 has not ever shown signs of overheating... Touching wood..(-:

The 14CUX +8s are set up to run hot in order to minimise emissions. Even though I have an alloy high capacity radiator and bonnet extension catches my fan will come on almost as soon as I have spent a couple of minutes in traffic. As soon as I get decent airflow through the radiator it cools down pretty rapidly, and tends to run around the 80/85 Deg C mark ( but I doubt the accuracy of the gauge!)

My 2002 car with Gems efi and Morgan Aluminium rad runsat... Winter...80deg Summer....90deg. It is sensitive to lack of airflow an£ the coolant goes up to about 97deg and the fan cuts in to drop it to about 85deg so the thermo switch seems to be a 85/97 version. Stuck in traffic showsit up. It has only overheated to 100+ when the fuse blew and the fan failed to cut in. Happened on the way to Windermere/ Scotland a couple of weeks ago. I am planning a manual override switch to cater for this ( only happened twice.). I’ll look at blanking off airflow that misses the rad core to improve through flow. I am testing a makeshift air duct aimed at the rad bottom as my front numberplate has an extension panel rearwards that deflects air past the lower rad area. I have a temporary cobbled together duct in place and will do running tests with the OBD scanner running to see what coolant temp does. No big rush but over- winter tests. No actual overheating but the fan cuts in too often due to the apparent system being on the cusp with limited cooling capacity.

My 1990 Plus 8, 3.5 EFI, performs as per MOG 615, normally runs around 85 degs but as soon as I hit traffic it goes up to 100 degs and the fan kicks in. It soon returns back to 85 degs when you start moving above about 20mph. It is still on its original radiator and does not have bonnet extenders
