To add to Neilda's comment the running cost of the larger cars is becoming a LOT more expensive as garages continue to increase their per hour labour charge on ICE cars and they become more complex as they hit EU6 emissions capability? A big lump like my ML63 and a Range Rover eat brakes and tyres etc so I expect the re-gen and lack of moving parts should make a heck of a difference when you multiple the work by hourly charge for servicing. This will continue to increase as the car dealerchains come under pressure through the squeeze ahead.
I still think the more valuable thing is to reduce travel as far as possible (for work) in order to drop all costs. Petrol, servicing, road charges (soon), insurance, tyres, speeding tickets (oops) and ginsters at the petrol stop. This is why I tend to do all my own servicing/maintenance. Recently changed the fanbelt on the Corsa. Due to transverse layout, the airbox, engine mount, wheel and inner arch had to be removed. Around 3hrs hours work for a £13 part - garage bill would have been nearer £150. Did the brakes/pads/discs and DIY was under £55. Unfortunately location of work means less travel is not an option, and local transport services are infrequent and expensive.

On todays prices, and based purely on fuel costs alone (not accounting tax/insurance/servicing/depreciation) our Hyundai is on 13p per mile and my Corsa on 17p per mile.
Depreciation is zero as they're very old and holding value but if you added in Tax, Insurance and Servicing, you can add an extra 3p per mile on to hers, and 4p per mile on mine.
I think I read earlier that an EV was on about 11p per mile (but I think that was just fuel costs alone). I've seen other websites quoting about 5-6p but again, insurance and depreciation are not factored in (I think EV's are currently tax free? - that'll probably change soon when the Gov't realise they are losing a massive amount of revenue). My EV is costing 6p a mile (up from 4p with the increased tariff), there's no depreciation as the car is worth more than I paid for it. I am also saving on zero servicing and zero road tax. Things will change, but with tax savings and savings on running costs, it's nearly paid for itself already. That aside, it's a very comfortable, quiet and rapid commuting appliance. Easy to own and cheap to run. I guess I could have shopped around for an old diesel that might get close on cost per mile and try and service it myself - but I don't want that sort of car to be honest.

Yes, I fully accept I'm bit of a dying breed when it comes to motoring - not bothered about status and 'luxury', and never happier than when waving my spanners around Suppose it comes from just riding bikes for many years.....

TBM if you can get 3 hours of labour for £150 (including VAT) then you are doing very well. Local MoT/general place in Wch is £80/hour +VAT Independant MB place I go to is £110/hour + VAT MB Franchise is now £150/hour +VAT You owe yourself an extra beer and tip at your prices. I might be round when the wifes Mini needs some work doing

The recent budget coupled with market forces, are quickly bringing parity between EV charging and IC costs. Those who bought their EV's a few months ago expecting to enjoy a fuel cost advantage will soon lose that advantage if the trend follows on in this direction - driving charging costs above that of filling up with diesel or petrol. Once EV's reach critical mass home charging will be taxed. Would it be a stretch to conclude that that's the main reason the government has pushed the installation of Smart meters at a cost of several billion £'s ? As a side note - after a six month long dispute with my energy supplier and the energy Ombudsman (who were totally useless) It's been agreed that my Smart meter has been over-reading by 53% since it was installed.

Best not let the media get hold of that one - there will be a stampede to energy suppliers!

Not possible as there's no way for any smart meter to distinguish what work the electricity flowing through the home circuitry is being used for. If they tried doing it through wall chargers people would simply switch to using granny chargers plugged into a normal domestic socket. Most analysts seem to believe that the strategy is to move towards road pricing to replace loss of fuel duty, but they still haven't decided on the best way to do it. My guess is that it will be a combination of extending congestion charging to all built-up areas, implementing route pricing on the heaviest routes, and bunging a mileage charge to be levied at MOT time.

I trust compensation is being paid. Now, how do we get them to under read by 53%???

I trust compensation is being paid. Now, how do we get them to under read by 53%??? This has been going on for almost three years so I'm now due to get back a four figure sum as a rebate. To add insult to injury, aside from the pitiful rebate they initially offered me, they added an additional £20 as, quote "a goodwill gesture"
