That was a point raised by Peter Ballard of SSL Peter. Given his unfamiliarity with the AVO shocks I had fitted he was unsure they had internal cushioned compression stops and even supplied some additional ones when I ordered their RS kit sans shocks. The AVO's it turns out do have such stops but on consideration I ordered the Spax gas adjustables that SSL have customised for their kit and fitted the whole lot together some time ago. The AVO's were sold on.

Jon (Cooperman), have added link on other thread as requested.

Don’t think it will prove anything either way. but it would be interesting to see a view of the broken faces. Usually, the first bit to break will be rusty and the last bit clean and shiny. Did it start at the hole and work outwards or vice versa?

Neither Doug, break marks suggest it initially cracked at half thickness across full width on the underside and had been like that for a little while. The enthusiasticly driven minor roads on the day of final parting finished off the other side. I did lightly chamfer edges of wing mount hole on replacement in case there was a stress riser there but guess it's inevitable presence of this hole makes for weakest point.

Note there is a deliberate slight bend in bracket to match the jaunty angle the shock absorber sits but this is comfortably outboard of hole/crack.

Thanks for the response Richard. So a crack from the underside obviously suggests excessive forces acting from underneath. I’m pretty sure you are aware of not over tightening the top nut on shockers. Even so, internal bump stops ought to minimise any shock load transferred to the plate.
“One of those things” perhaps but something we can all look out for.
Good one to share.

Thanks Doug. Note you cannot overtighten the top shock nut on the Spax gas (part of the RSS kit) shocks at least, because it's against a metal bush that runs through upper and lower top rubbers Doug. I was careful not to overtighten lower ones though.

Yes will put the whole exercise down to rare occurence and keep a close eye on other side.
