I had the same rattling with the gear shift as Gambalunga years ago. At first I was really scared because it sounded as if a gear in the transmission was broken...
Other rattling reasons, The extended antenna, the height-adjustable steering wheel in the highest position rattles against the dashboard. That's why I stay a touch below the highest position, the soft top linkage can also rattle quite ugly in some places especially when it's open. The bonnet, of course, also rattles when those little rubbers on the centre bar are missing, but more so when the car is idling. Also the locking hooks of the bonnet if grease is missing. The bad thing is that our sense of hearing in a car is almost always played tricks on.

It was a rotten doughnut connector on the exhaust on mine allowing the pipe to rattle in the silencer.

Same on mine. Exhaust Doughnut!. Got replacement from Wolf. Also changed all the rubber Silencer vibration mounts for Silicone (also from Wolf). had to release the rear mounting and did the job in about an hour.

Ive given my exhausts a bit of a shake and don't think this is where the rattle is coming from. I have removed the luggage rack and tightened up the overider as they were slightly rattly. Hopefully this has cured the rattle. I did have a look at the rear dampers as dave w suggested but they looked in order.

There was a story many years ago, and I don't know if it's true or not. A customer had a car with an odd rattle. It had been back to the dealer many times, but no one could find the source. Eventually someone cut open a sealed section of the body. Inside was a steel nut hanging by a string. Along with it was a note that read "Bet it took you a long time to find this".

I hope you have better luck.

Much the same as kids putting a nice big stone in the old metal hubcaps of the neighbour's car 🙂

Some lazy git used to block off our works car park entrance because it was close to his posh apartment...someone may have put a piece of grit inside his valve caps and carefully screwed them back on for him innocent

As a manager at Unilever Nairobi I had a dedicated parking spot. As I was rebuilding the site I was often off site and one toe rag regularly stole my space. A length of anchor chain and padlocking his car to the fence stopped that. Cars in the 1980s in Kenya had handy real bumpers. innocent

Well, the rattle is still there. I thought that it might have been all the keys on the key ring, but it's not them. Think I'm gonna have to get under for a good look around.
