Agreed re discs and pads being a staple of the "you will need them soon" school of cobblers.

The ML is big and heavy and I like late braking and roundabouts. I got warned about new ones being needed twice (annual service!) before I got mine done. Next service I got the same rubbish and asked for a quote and then quietly chuckled at the guy in reception. I pulled up the order for the EBC front discs, pads and Brembo armoured car rear discs and showed him the date. Suddenly I was told that the workshop must have made the note on the wrong cars service manifest. Started using Tim Purslow the Indy after that.

(I was wrong re the Battery, 220ish for the item, fitting, coding and VAT on top of that.)

My wife’s mini gets the same video treatment from her main dealer. It’s all to justify exorbitant prices. How “lovely” to see a pic of my tyre tread, etc. I would appreciate it far more if the vid contained footage of actual work done, like seeing the oil actually being changed, seeing what type of oil is put back in, see the spark plugs removed etc.
When she took it in for a simple brake fluid change, unasked for, they heaped £36 on top to stick it on their analyser in case there were any hidden faults!! Never again, She will stick to our local independent at almost half the price and double the care and attention.
Modern times!

Yes the Video's do feel a bit like they are going through the motions. Mind you they also provide evidence for unaccountable invoicing later.

There could be a couple of reasons behind your £36 Doug.

1. The software they use to run the diagnosis does cost money and that needs to be recharged (£36 does sound steep)
2. They may be updating your cars service record on the manufacturers system, which costs to have access to.

For item 2 I understand that the manufacturers levy a charge to work with the servicebook in the sky. So the indy's who are serious need to do this as well.
Initially it was something they got as a partner however in some cases they are now charged on a car by car model so they pass the access charge onto the customer.
So each time you have a service they update the record with work done.

I know that the local Indy I use for the MB (Tim Purslow) does use this and charges me. I asked about it and hence my comments here. I personally like that they are updating the full MB service record as it does protect the car value and on this car that is valueable.

When they run the diagnostic and update that they have done the service this is uploaded to the cloudy service schedule.

Cynical me would highlight this as a cost, happy me would point out that I can ask the dealer to prove the service record.
Worried me will point out that a lot of information is being stored which will at some point appear as targeted advertising on Fishbook.

BMW used to ping me a video of the i3 service which always made me chuckle as the underside walk through was all just plain heavily reinforced undertray, 'cos it's an EV Sir...
