The first time I saw a Skyline I was unimpressed and looked upon it as no more than any ordinary Nissan saloon. Perhaps that the GTR was a very similar colour to an old circa 1200 cc Nissan I had owned some years back caused me to have no interest in it initially... Only when I heard the engine fire up did the sound of the exhaust cause me to ask questions.

Now having learned a bit more about the GTR, I only view it slightly differently. I guess had I been younger and bought into the hype/cultural aspect created by being a fan of the Fast & Furious films, I would perhaps have been drooling over it as I would be over a 72 911RS, I guess it is just a generational thing...?

I would not swap my old 991 for a GTR despite the GTR`s much higher market value kinda says it all...?

OZ, it was as a schoolboy in the early sixties that I became aware of Japanese engineering in the form of m/cycles when Honda turned up and won a couple of the IOM TT races, and from then on Japanese bikes swept the Boards with their motorcycle engineering excellence, thus although very much a fan of Norton, Triumph and others of the UK bike industry, Honda were very much a part of my m/cycle upbringing. I never got round to appreciating Japanese cars until the seventies and only then as basic transport that rusted away rather too quickly in my climate. Japanese race cars did not come to the fore in my mind at a time when I was more than a little impressed with Lotus and a few years later became a fan of Porsche, more through their run of wins at LM. For sure Ferrari excited me too but they were thought to be well out of my range of possible achievement.

I was aware of the 240Z but it just did nothing for me I guess to my mind it was not much more than a failed attempt to match the beauty that was the E type, that failed to impress the likes of me. T`was not until a couple of years ago that a neighbour drove along the road with the Skyline that I learned how far Nissan had taken race design to heart, Once I saw under the bonnet of both his Skylines I was impressed, the later one had an engine signed by it`s builder, much in the Way Aston Martin used to do... So yeah those Skylines are really special cars for sure... In search of education I did try to watch Fast and Furious, I could only stick it for a few minutes it was like Top Gear on steroids, way too much tyre generated smoke to impress an old dog such as I.

I am happy to stick to the worship of the cars that played a big part in my formative years. I took a pic of my neighbours GTR`s linked below.

Fair, they are not the same in many ways. The 32 was subtle. The 33 was a bit blobby. The 34 looked brutal. But the drivetrain made them a blast. The 35 is different. If you have not driven a loved 33/34 you should. £400k is just daft though.

I can't agree with that, not meant in a personal manner. I stepped out of a tweaked 968 Club Sport which I loved into a 33GTRv and never looked back. It was wicked. It needed tuning as the 280hp limit on Japanese cars was not suitable for the capabilities of that drivetrain. 550hp was a blast. 700hp even better if you had the room to use it.


Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

I can well understand where you are coming from Alastair, the power output figures my neighbour quoted for his Nur spec car seemed crazy and he intended to send it off to Lichfield to have it intensley detailed and breathed upon..To my eyes it looked a tad dated and not in a Classic way, though the newer version did look the part.

Imagining if I were the kid I was in my 20`s and saw a GTR in my 991`s rear view mirror, I would know not to even begin to try smile
