Is a Quaife LSD simply an add on to the existing bevel gear and ring gear or do these parts also come new? Does anyone know if I can retrofit a Quaife LSD to my MY 2014 4/4? So if the crownwheel and pinion have to come new, perhaps Quaife offers different final drive ratios? I'm quoting SimonH from another thread about why I can't get a 1:4.11 final drive:
„Because BTR changed the size of the crownwheel and pinion. They went from an 8” diameter to 8.8” or similar, The diff carrier (the pigs head) in the middle of the axle is also physically larger and heavier Morgan didn’t want to invest in new CWP sets with different ratios BTR also no longer make the axle so spares will dry up in a few years“
Kev (Alpha1), do you have an actual 2014 4/4 with 1:4.11 final drive? If so, how did you realise it considering what SimonH writes? It would be very interesting for me to know if there are options.
I have an additional question for all experts, if all this is not feasible with the later BTR axle, can I retrofit my 2014 4/4 to an older BTR axle? Was there even the combination of the older BTR axle with the Mazda transmission or was it changed from the Ford transmission to Mazda at the same time as the newer BTR axle was introduced? Because if there was no overlap then there won't be an off-the-shelf propshaft that would fit properly...so front on the Mazda transmission and rear on the old BTR axle.... And finally, are the older and newer BTR axles the same length? I always have the impression that my 4/4 is wider in the rear than the slightly older 4/4 Sigma Sports models ca. up to 2011? were. So many questions.....

Good idea the check which diff you actually have (easy test as per Dave W's post) because you should be using different oils and LSD additives...worth reminding your dealer if they do your servicing too , Agree Jon, and you dont want your brakes tested on a rolling road for MOT if you have a LSD either or so ive been told My MOT station always check my brakes on the rolling road no problem.

Note sure if it helps Heinz but found this page on the Quaife website indicating Morgan options on their ATB replacement for open diff.

That's at odds with my local test station Keith. Had two MOT's performed their now and on first occasion forgot to mention my car has LSD. Although the tester was seemingly unfamiliar with Morgan's, he discovered my car had LSD and apologised for having to take it out with Tapley Meter to test handbrake. As a precaution always mention this now since testers vary. I did find a report by a Porsche owner claiming a test centre had trashed the LSD on his car by using their rollers!

The story of a Porsche LSD diff being damaged during a brake test is one quoted to me when I queried use of the Tapley meter when my +8 was first MOT`d since then I ever make a point of ensuring the testers know my Morgan has an LSD... I can well do without the risk, fuss and bother of it being damaged.

... Heinz, Sorry for any confusion my final drive is a 3.9 not the standard 3.7. Not sure if it was ordered that way or they had run out of 3.7's. Definitely an improvement tho being lower geared. Hope that clears it up.

When the 4/4 Sport was first announced, and you couldn't order a bespoke 4/4, there was a track pack option. Ledgerwood had one in 08 or 09.
This comprised a roll bar, extinguisher, race harnesses, door roundels, and probably more. This may have included an LSD, and lower ratio diff.

Interesting, I've had my car tested at Berrybrooks and Allon Whites as well as my local, they never took the car out. I think we need a definitive answer from someone.

I think the situation is that for non LSD diffs, each rear wheel is tested in turn for footbrake and handbrake. My tester who always asks to be reminded about the LSD tests both rear wheels for footbrake and handbrake at the same time.

Mine gets tested on a rolling road with no problems, prior to that it was tested on plates. Occasionally the tester takes it out with a Tapley meter, but I reckon that's because he likes having a drive in it. Perhaps it's only locking plate diffs that have an issue with RRs?
