Just wondering if anyone noted the passing of Tom Karen (Ogle Design) who gave us at least three notable 'classics' ... The Reliant Scimitar GTE (possibly the first hatch back), the Raleigh Chopper and the Bond Bug. A belated RIP Tom Karen. Peter H

I think that there were a number of "hatchbacks" which pre-dated the Scimitar GTE, such as the Aston Martin DB2/4, The AC Aceca and even the E-Type coupe. However, his designs were much more affordable.

I'd say the Scimitar was an estate not a hatchback. Possibly the first production sporting estate ?

The Europa was neither a hatchback nor an estate. Originaly it was powered by a mid-mounted engine from the Renault 16, before the Twin-Cam version became available. You may be thinking of the second generation Lotus Elite, but it was a much later design.

He did some fun work very representative of the time. I thought the Scimitar was available as a GTC and a GTE meaning GTC (Coupe) GTE (Estate) I always looked at it as a shooting brake more than a puka estate. The hatch was smaller than a fully functioning estate. You could load Corgi's but not Great Danes

Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.
