Here - thats the application I was trying to think of which has all the maps built in and does not use data. Excellent App. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/here-wego-maps-navigation/id955837609

Garmin. Doris’ dulcet tones guide the way. Fixed via suction device to the dashboard.

Another for Here WeGo. We used this last summer on a tour of Scotland, benefits as well as no data used, no phone signal is required when the maps are used offline. Useful in the Highlands though no live traffic information is then available, but not an issue in the wilds of Scotland.

Garmin in the UK.... For a good reason... My "yankee" cell phone map couldn't react/update quick enough in round-a-bouts to get the turn outs correct. Needless to say, I played circle jerk a few times! For here in the states, the andriod/apple play map functions work great.

Another app suggestion is “Sygic GPS Navigation & Maps” - you can download the maps and use without a phone signal. Covers most of the world too I believe.

BourbonMog.
What you are describing sounds like bad Sat reception. Most of the apps are pretty quick when running from phone memory. What causes the delay is if they are low down and cannot get a good fix on 4-5+ sat's at a time. Did it have good access, dash top, screen mount etc ?
Having said that when I go off track (miss a junction due to traffic and bad planning) with Waze it sometimes acts stubborn and takes a while to work it out.

I have a spare iPhone 6s which you can stuff a PAYG SIM into and use for the UK bits if you like. It will do the live WAZE stuff without a problem. It dragged us around Europe for our long trip.

Garmin. Doris’ dulcet tones guide the way. Fixed via suction device to the dashboard. You must be very tolerant, I couldn't stand Mr Johnson directing me

Which satellite navigation is recommended.
An old chestnut I suspect
Grateful for suggestions as to which sat nav to trust. Since I live in Oz and visit Europe periodically international maps are a pre requisite.
Thanks. Havent read all the posts but Waze does a reasonable job of warning of speed traps and you need that in the UK these days
