As Julian said - if you are asking the question it's time to go as it wouldn't be there if you weren't in a position to leave It's great out there I jumped two years early and love it. Good luck with your decision making.

I managed the restoration and maintenance for a ship museum that was a part of an education non-profit. When three to four times more money was being spent on education programs than on the maintenance of the vessels, it was time to go. That was ten years ago and I do miss my ships, but not the politics...

An ex work colleague told me the other day... don't ask yourself what you are retiring from, but what are you retiring to. Of course those of us with Morgans will never be bored but it's a good perspective. I'm doing what I call my retirement job, which it pretty stress free. But thinking of stopping this time next year as the usual work politics is starting to overshadow the fun bits.

My retirement plan is to get an old £800 bike from eBay, spend £200 tarting it up and get it running, and then sell it for £1000. Then repeat.
Not a massive money making opportunity, but will fund my fun time.

when the time is right to retire? In my case, when the board decided to shut down the joint venture project in which I was working. The MD asked what I was going to do. I said I was going to accept the large redundancy cheque and my full pension and retire. That was when I was 58. Haven't regretted it at all, There is plenty to do in retirement if you want.

I tried retiring at 68 and was so bored I went back, finally gave up a year ago at 77 but only because of the politics. I still miss the buzz of the job.

Some interesting responses here…
I retired some years ago.
For me the decision was straight forward. I was content with what I had achieved and was in a fortunate position to explore other interests.
My post was prompted by SWMBO who recently saw the question ‘when do you know when it’s time to retire?’ posted on a forum following the recent ruthless round of global I.T. layoffs – the responses were wide and varied and could largely be categorised by age and ambition.
Instinctively I think you know when the time is right.

Instinctively I think you know when the time is right. I told my Board and staff that I would retire at a very specific point in time, when the digital clock in my office displayed 09:10:11:12:13 Almost nine years and two months on, I couldn't be happier.

The (Japanese) company that I worked for didn’t want me to retire. Apparently they value age and experience! My health said otherwise and 10 years ago, I retired at age 62. Those 10 years have been great. Many of the things that seemed important when I was working, have become irrelevant. My advice! If your pensions allow, retire as soon as you can. Enjoy the rest of your life. You’ve earned it. Bud 4/4 - Stanley
