There's nothing more maddening than seeing a link to an article, and only being able to read the first - teasing - paragraph.

The way it works is that publications want users to find them on Google, so let Google see a cached copy: https://12ft.io/ gets that & shares it.

Ethically, I'm OK with reading an occasional article this way - like a student not needing permission to photocopy an article for research.
If we want writers to keep writing they need to be paid, so I register/like/subscribe when I find an author I like - eg https://www.the-intercooler.com/

I agree re not using this as a primary way of reading but for occasional articles. it is following their marketing goal of gaining additional potential readers which is what letting Google have access to them is all about, attracting new readers.
