[I agree with you, but what idiots are now and in the foreseeable future going it to be running the mad house, who will be guiding the direction of industry and the state, it wont be my or your generation, It will be the snow flakes and millenniums and they have a completely different in many ways values and view on life Just look at how quickly the WOKE agenda is changing public opinion, social values and the future direction, even Roald Dahl books are being rewritten and sanitised.

Whilst I cling to the hope that there is room for the rest of my lifetime for an affordable ICE allowing me complete freedom of movement I have enjoyed to-date, I think future events will conspire against me. The pace of change is gaining momentum and increasingly as our generations leave this mortal coil, the social and economic policy direction will shift towards the younger generations priorities. We are yesterdays people hanging onto a lifestyle of independence and freedoms born of the fossil fuel age..........................

yeah... sadly there's more headlines in banning something than in - in this instance - steady work to make all cars much much cleaner. There's some stats kicking about in a UK Gov paper that suggest the car industry has got a whole lot less-polluting over the past 20-30 years, in spite of there being many more cars on the road.

Politicians are at their best when they legislate for standards. If the technology can meet the standard it can be sold.

Manufacturers are already obliged to clean up the whole lifecycle of their products, at inception, in use and end of life.

There's work ongoing to reduce the pollution from tyres and brakes which exceed exhaust pollutions on cars, be they IC, Hybrid or EV - but proclamations to ban things get headlines, not quiet, purposeful progress.

I think that the days of personal vehicle transport being affordable to all are coming to an end. If the higher taxes that (I think) will inevitably come to vehicle ownership was used to fund cheaper trains and coaches, free local buses and the development of on-demand mini-buses, then this may not necessarily be a bad thing - but I
don't see it somehow.

EVs are a first world politically motivated response to a crisis which won't be solved by rich people driving EVs.

^^^ Exactly that, you only have to read the WHO report I posted earlier and this EV stuff is miniscule in the larger picture, it makes well off people feel good.

Don’t know what the % is but a lot of young ens have no intention of buying a car. My lad is managing without one (albeit in a city centre Fishergate apartment) whereas when I was his age I had to save up for an XR3.

Becomes a problem when they leave the city to raise a family in the suburbs.

Also city centres will be squeezing the pips on ICE’s in future - Sheffield just bringing one in for commercial vehicles/taxi’s.

True, the young ones living in a city or urban area are reluctant to buy a car, they use UBER txies, public transport and so on, up to the point they have children, when they discover a car is essential.
The young ones living outside cities and the urban sprawl know that there is no viable public transport and no UBERs, so they pass their tests and drive. Many would drive an EV, but they are as yet, unaffordable so they drive 10 to 20 year old small ICE cars, affordable and reliable.

Cities can tax the motorist up to a point, but we are already seeing public resistance around London and Canterbury. The leader of Canterbury council has pushed through plans to get cars out of the city centre but the result could be the Conservatives lose control of the Council, I read.

Salisbury City Centre could do with a way to keep HGVs and through traffic out of the city, a ring road/bypass was planned in the 1990s but canned as unaffordable by John Prescott. Congestion is such that it can take 20 mins to drive 3 miles from home to the inner ring road, most of the time sitting in stationary traffic on the A36/Southampton Road.

It seems that everybody knows what they don't want, but have no idea how to achieve their objectives.

No signs of my Daughter and SIL getting rid of their Vantage or Focus ST, so not one size fits all.

Thinking about it, if MMC were able to keep selling petrol cars under the exemption rules while Porsche, Lotus etc were fully electric, that might give them a significant USP (in addition to their present quirkiness)in future years.

They could still offer an electric version.

Exactly - and tyres + brakes cause substantially more pollution than exhaust pipes:
"The report estimates 52% of all the small particle pollution from road transport came from tyre and brake wear in 2021, plus a further 24% from abrasion of roads and their paint markings. Just 15% of the emissions came from the exhausts of cars and a further 10% from the exhausts of vans and HGVs."
