I bet the Motorway Service stations are loving the EV revolution. We stopped at one on the way to Worcester the other day as my Mrs needed a wee. We did think about plugging in for a trial, but there were only two normal EV chargers and they were full. There were however about 20+ Tesla chargers and they were full of Milk Floats.

I imagine all the drivers/passengers were in the services buying teas/coffees/snacks etc while waiting for them to charge, whereas the conventional trade would have been in and out of the petrol stations in minutes and back on the road.

Exactly this. We usually do an F1 refuelling stop at services. Toilets only if essential.

TBM - when you say Milk Floats, what specifically is that referring to? BEV's in general?

Luddite - My 4x4 is currently a 3x3! It went in for a service and on the way gave me the big red ! symbol on the dash. Sod's law. One of the airbag's for the air suspension had given up. Replacement actually involves the whole strut leg of course. So it is now a 3x3 waiting for parts. For a month and expected delivery is another 6 weeks. Made in the USA MB plant as this is closest to it's main market. So no spare in the EU, it has to be sent from US to DE, then to UK, then to Dealer and they currently had zero stock. Magic. Cannot wait to see the bill for this one, actually I can!

I think it is only right that people install a new fused spur for the car charger. Can you imagine the press if your home went up in smoke "due to charging your car overnight" and the knock on effect in everyone's house insurance. Not good. It is a heavy consistent load on a house system that is technically unknown to the installer. Heaven knows what home adjustments might have been made ? So the liability for the installer is interesting without it.

Mind you 3x3 sounds like Morgan's next "special" a CX-T style super 3 perhaps laugh2 Chunky rubber, F1 style roof bars (exit might prove interesting for our average age group innocent )

It also makes way more sense if you have made the move to self generated/stored electric as some here have clearly planned ahead so well.

If I wanted to save the world it would seem more intelligent to work on shared transport outside of main train lines, urban transport, city flexible schemes (applause to the bike and scooter schemes) and reduction of travel altogether through more work from home schemes in industry being supported. Would the amount of cash dumped into HSR2 (to the benefit of extensive private companies) done something better?

Some people complain about the morass of delivery vans but that just took out 140-200 individual journeys per day, albeit it does enable overt consumerism in some cases.

Okay I am off for a snickers, I am clearly bordering on being hangry. Good old Rowan.

Yep - the Milk Float was the start of the electric revolution, and modern EV's are all glorified derivatives......

Ah, I remember them and the clinking over the cobbles. Good old Ernie.

There's one that still does the rounds in MK - maybe a little misguided as most of the grid roads are 60 or 70mph.....

Alistair, on your fishbook post.. laugh2

.I believe in many cases a new fused spur might not cut the mustard, more so if one`s home is on a split supply with a neighbour, in other words an electricity company`s main supply cable fed into one house and then looped through to the neighbour as in many semi detached situations.... Also ideally the main fuse would be ideally 100 amps, whereas many shared supplies may be fused at 60 amps..?

Shared supplies obviously cut down on cable and installation cost for electricity companies.

Also perhaps worth noting may be effective earthing, anti surge protection (lightning strikes and the likes) as well as the installation of a suitable circuit breaker rated for the likely duration of the LOAD, 32 amps max in the UK, which may be drawn for circa 7 hours or more.

There are specialist installers, and in the case of Tesla and perhaps others there is a list of local trained installers on their web site who seem likely to have attended a course on the specifics of installation prior to being "listed"..?

It is just possible that for some time prior to electrified milk delivery "floats" there were somewhat faster electric vehicles..?

Addendum, apologies Alistair, I drifted into max current household charging whereas your spur suggestion may have been more related to 10 amp charging via a 13A outlet..

According to Zurich Insurance, and I quote: "EVs actually present a lower fire risk than ICE and subsequent statistics appear to have verified this." I haven't had any insurance issues.

Ho hum.

My 450bhp 'milk float' has had zero issues in 30,000 miles - unlike my Morgan (and many others on here) that always have 'something'.

As always, it is non owners that have most to say on this subject. smile
