I see it the other way - a glimmer of hope for the ICE The agreement was delayed for weeks after Germany called for an exemption for cars running on e-fuels.
E-fuels are considered carbon neutral because they use captured CO2 emissions to balance out the CO2 released when the fuel is combusted in an engine.
The new law had been expected to make it impossible to sell internal combustion engine cars in the EU from 2035.
However, the exemption won by Germany will now help those with traditional vehicles - even though e-fuels are not yet produced at scale.
The EU will say how sales of e-fuel-only cars can continue later this year.

Today, the liberal party of Germany, FDP, prevailed in a coalition committee. Efuels will come and new ICE cars may be registered after 2035 if they run on Efuels. Of course, existing vehicles with ICE can also continue to run on Efuels after 2035. Anything else would be nonsense in my view. It should not be forgotten that the Efuels were already agreed in the coalition agreement in the fall of 2021. The EU had also agreed. Only later the EU acted as if it didn't want to take it seriously. But now it is a fact.

My rough understanding is that the CO2 is taken from the atmosphere to make the fuel. When the fuel is burned in an ICE, exactly the same amount of CO2 is blown into the atmosphere as was previously extracted during the production of efuel. CO2 is simply taken from the atmosphere, regardless of whether it was previously emitted by other ICEs or was part of the naturally occurring CO2. Just now a green eco-woman railed against Efuels in a talk show...it would only be good for a few rich people to be allowed to continue driving their Porsche 911. That is of course pure nonsense. Efuels are refined from a synthetic raw product, just like fossil oil today. That is why all stages of products, gasoline, kerosene, diesel, etc. are obtained. It is impossible to imagine the ships and airplanes of the future without it.

Good news for ICE whatever the arguments but more particularly continued availability of fuel for them.
