All good advice but I wanted to say I changed the diff oil at under 10,000 miles and noticed it was very grey with what MIGHT have been a bedding in compound. I don't know for sure but refilled with the right stuff and have done again since a couple of times. Now comes out quite clean. IMportant to therefore change oil after a running in period.
Notwithstanding the fact that many remain garaged/stored for a long time before getting "run-in" and todays vehicles are said not need much mileage to be fully up to speed.

Every 5,000miles for my Plus 8 with BTR Limited slip diff is quoted in the handbook.
I do my own servicing and it was clean as a whistle at that so now do it at 10k and it's still clean.

The first time I changed the diff oil it came out dark grey/black. Some believe it to be filled for life, and that's their choice. I prefer an occasional change. And 5k miles is reasonable on a low mileage car when that might be two years or more.

I apply the same logic to the gearbox.

I am also one of those who find it important to change the diif oil and transmission oil. But honestly, I do it about every 50,000 km.

MMC has a mileage for change Dave. For the S1 Roadster it was 100k. I chose 25K as that is roughly 3 years driving for me . Strangely for the 4/4 & +4 it says 20K

Looking back at a service checklist for my +4 from a well known dealer, it says
Gearbox oil: replace only if older model or if requested by customer
Axle oil: Change at 100,000 miles or every 4 years.

Axle takes 1.7 litres of 80W/140 Semi synthetic Syntrax (now appears to be replaced by “Transmax 75 w 140”)
Gearbox: 1.7 litres or maybe a bit more of Morris Lodexol FS 75W90

I best get mine changed then as my car is about to turn 7 and just under 20,000 miles. Pity that it's just had it's annual service so will be sure to get it done next year.

Good tip

However, rather than just loosen the filler it's good practice to remove it entirely prior to draining, doing so will make the draining process faster and potentially more complete as a removed filler plug allows air in as you drain the diff.

So many variations for diff oil change intervals but every 5 years seems a reasonable approach.
Some cars obviously will do many miles in that time where many won’t.
