I’ve been reading this thread with fond memories. I think enough time has passed (64 years) for me to relate what I did without too much embarrassment. I was 19 at the time and the 1947 4/4 S1, Standard engine, was my second car, bought for £35. The front suspension needed replacement, but in the days before TM or the ‘net and no other Morgan owner in my Lancs town – how to get information or parts? With the car in pieces and a trip to Lifes by bus or train too complicated, F.H. Douglas came to my aid but posing a question by letter and waiting for a reply typically took a week to 10 days. Eventually, the parts were obtained, but then how to do it.
I used a screw jack, extended, placed under the bottom plate, and held in place using mother’s (soon to be ex-) washing line looped under the jack and over the chassis, removed the nut and wound down the jack. A friend who worked at English Electric, building Canberras, did the bearings and everything went back together the same way.
Later, I used to drive 30 miles to Southport just to go past Lifes and look in the window, a white +4 Supersports I remember. My 4/4, FUO 919, got me going on a lifelong enthusiasm. My granny gave me a proper toolbox and a pair of white overalls. I went on to change the clutch, rebuild the steering box with oversize nut, make a complete new wiring loom in all correct colours and many other jobs on many other cars, but it all started with those kingpins and bushes.
