I think if you are happy to live with their eating habits, then absolutely fair enough. They are a joy to see and have with you in the countryside. Some of the deer using your area will be "lost" as land neighbours cull, but it will even out. Roe normally give birth to one or two a year, twins are very common, so the population bounces back mostly, unless there is a lot of poaching. In my area we have Roe, Red and Fallow. Red and Fallow will travel long distances, where as Roe mostly stay local. Our biggest issue is out of season night poaching, although its illegal and a serious crime to commit with a firearm ( armed tresspass ) it happens a lot. Both the Reds and the Fallow are impacted. Its very hard to manage Red and Fallow numbers correctly over an area where there is a lot of poaching. The Fuzz dont see it as a No 1 priority, so are of little help. With deer management if you need to reduce overall numbers its females to cull and preferably the old/sick etc first. Reducing the male population does not have the same impact as reducing the female numbers.
If you are replanting them yes, tree protectors are one of the good solutions, or deer fence the area. With the protectors you may have to use larger ones as the trees grow. Basically, beyond the reach of Roe mouth and tonque. A farmer near us planted out a 10 acre copse on the farm border last year and only used rabbit type guards, the result is the deer took the tops out of every one of the saplings, the whole lot is now dead.

Last year, a tree in our garden where he had one of his hives fell down in a storm.
Since then, he regularly climbs up the wall of the house and puts a few bitten branches on the windowsill.

Bmgermany .... hope he doesn't re-locate to your loft/roof-space .... friends a bit north of here had Pine Martens raise a family in their loft ... they loved watching them run down the walls and play with the young ones on the patio ... but the mess up there was indescribable! ... are they your horses? ... they look like Fresians but hard to tell from the pic.

this is a squirrel and not a marten ... or am I wrong here ?

Difficult with camera angle, but looks as if it’s got a creamy coloured bib… so for me, that says Marten.

No, that are not our horses and you are right they are Friesians bred by a neighbour.
They are award-winning, so he even has customers in the Netherlands.

It is always nice for us to see these animals.

Yep the pic is definitely a squirrel ... the Marten story was just an illustration of the mess if things nest in the house 🙂

My Morgan was in an eight unit garage for the last week. The car was covered with a protective hood but I had the windows open for ventilation. A marten climbed under the cover into the interior and thankfully only bit the tool bag.

Yep ... they can be pretty 'chewy' ... we've seen them in the woods round here but never near the house ... they got quite rare in the UK for a while but they're having a resurgence all across the country these days.

Fortunately our couple of formidable cats keep nasties away from our various workshops and garages.
