I am, and after a lifetime of pottering with them. I find myself frustrated by the state of the roads preventing enjoyable fast driving even here in SE Wales. And the other aspect that I always enjoyed, taking them to bits and fettling, I find i can no longer do because age makes it difficult to "get down and get under" or at least to get up again afterwards . Never been one for "detailing" and car shows of the sort where you park up and sit by your car / potter about looking.

So what is the point? Driving down to the boat, the preferred mode of transport is the motorbike when I can at least filter through the jams.

Having enjoyed motoring from the 60s onwards, I reckon I have enjoyed the good years and now its really just about transport at best. Do you find the same feeling?

For fettling get yourself a car lift and with the help of an old office chair you can perform many jobs sitting down working at eye level. Mine was just £1500 delivered.



Not two years old yet, it's already paid for itself.

I think I need to get myself one of those - it'll need to be portable as I'll have to drag it from the back of the garden to the front drive, but would certainly save my back and knees....

As for the original question - still as enthused with tinkering as i ever was. State of the roads doesn't really bother me as I'm happy to drive according to conditions and not desperate to race everywhere. These days I actually seem to prefer bimbling along - if I wanted to 'make progress' I'd probably get hampered by dithery motorists or cyclists which increases my stress levels. Easier to tuck in, crank up the tunes and enjoy the scenery......

This week I've got a few little jobs on the MG, a few pre-holiday checks on the Morgan, got to prep the ZX10 for MOT and get the GL1000 ready for sale. The only thing that stops me is the weather - no joy in tinkering in the rain.

I've had my four poster for over ten years now, it's a wonderful device and would not want to be without it now. But like all lifts it has it's pros and cons. You need to buy the type that fits your needs best.
I could not do with laying on that cold concreate now.

The thing about cars like Morgans and Pembletons is they make every journey enjoyable. When there’s the opportunity you can have fun getting rapidly to 60mph, and I’ve always found traffic jams and rainy days much more pleasant when sitting in a Morgan.

The pump trolley on mine (picture link to source above) has a hook which allows the main ramp to be jacked up to provide movement. Given the considerable weight to allow 2.7 ton lift capacity, not as an everyday occurrence though. Mine lives in the same place on garage floor with stainless plates for ramps rear wheels to ride on during scissor action. Morton sits over it when not in use.

Unfortunately mine will have to travel down the garden, down the gravelled side of the house and onto the concrete slab at the front.

I've had a look at this, which should be OK for the MG and Mog, and looks like it can be broken down into parts to make life easier......

I’ve had one of those and yes they are pretty good, make sure you get the adjustable width one as the Morgan chassis is too narrow for the fixed width one. Also they can be a hard work to raise, even though they say it can be lifted using s drill, it needs to be a decent drill! Finally the need a smooth surface to move on, struggled a bit with the concrete ridges on my garage floor. Metal sheets solved that one.

Good value if you have the patience to use it.

TBM - I have one of these lifts and I do find it very helpful - but- it would not travel on gravel - mine is only really mobile on smooth concrete or tarmac. Also I had to make wooden “platforms ” to drive the Mog onto to generate clearance as the clearance under the car didn’t allow me to slide the lift under otherwise.

In fact a quick look has this one on eBay with a discount code. Delivery is a bit steep but it’ll fit in a ‘normal’ car (possibly even a B GT)
