A member of the Austin 7 forum spotted this announcement from ESSO: " We currently supply an ethanol-free Synergy Supreme+ 99 unleaded in some parts of the UK. From September 2023 our Synergy Supreme+ 99 will transition to contain up to a maximum of 5% ethanol at all Esso pumps irrespective of which part of the country they are located. The labelling at our pumps will remain as E5 for Synergy Supreme+ 99 unleaded." www.esso.co.uk/en-gb/fuels

Thanks Ian. Shame it's happening, but inevitable I guess.

Otherwise, ask BertR at this forum, he is well informed at this matter!

I use E10 in the Mog and the MG. Occasionally I put a tank of E5 in, but haven't noticed any change in performance or mpg when I have done.
I have used Valvemaster Plus (fuel additive) in the past which reports to remove any of the ethanol nasties, and give some form of octane boost, but again, don't bother anymore.

I only go to Shell and use their V Power for the Mog
Only because I have a very good friend who is a architect that just specialises in roadside developments which is mainly fuel stations and he works for all the big retailers and he told me years ago that only Shell have replaced all their underground tanks with new moisture free tanks so there is a low risk of any water in the fuel
It might be different now and all the other retailers might well have now upgraded but I’m sticking to Shell V Power

I always tried getting Shell V-Power in thePlus 8. I used to get very occasional intermittent random misfire triggering the MIL light. The V-Power cured that. The engine is deemed ethanol safe but not so sure about ancillaries. Pump, fuel lines etc. I got 1-2 extra mpg with it too. The extra cost was not a real issue due to relatively low mileages but the misfire removal was nice. A few years ago I had a Focus Turbo diesel. Long commutes so needed for them. I tried Millers Octane boost and it gave increased mpg. Bottle cost £12. It dosed several tankfuls. Net better mpg saved £37 so net £25 saving. A colleague tried it in his golf diesel but it didn’t work, maybe marginal but nothing worthwhile. Looks possibly like the ecu map worked differently. I’ll be sticking to E10 in the Plus Four until mileage has built up then try E5 to see if any effect. A bit soon to test with a new engine.
