Hi,
Can anyone tell me if it would be possible to legally remove the catalytic converters from a 1993 Plus 8 and still be legal and pass the MOT?
Experience of the Rover V8 engine makes me think the V8 engines prefer to be free of the cats to perform better.

From http://www.motuk.co.uk/manual_730.htm<The catalyst test is part of the MOT test for most spark ignition petrol engined passenger cars with four or more wheels first used on and after 1 August 1992.> I don't think the Rover engine will emit to cat standards without one, there are folk saying they've removed the cat and got away with it, but whether all test centres would pass the car I rather doubt.

New MOT regs for 2012 will check for the removal of a cat that was fitted as original equipment

Try a sports cat, far fewer cells, though might not pass an emission test for the road.

I have a Sport Cat on my 4/4 and passed MOT fine.

Its interesting that Librands have moved away from a 200 cell Sports cat to a 400 cell one. When I purchased my system Rob Wells told me that there had been some issues with the 200 cell cat at MOT time. Sounded as though it was very borderline.

Yes he told me the same so I stuck with the origional cat.

Unfortunately I had to have the cat, the old one being integral with the original manifold on the Sigma engines....rather a shame as the cat represents a fair bit of the total cost of the sports manifold!
I'm visiting a friend tomorrow who manufactures silencers for various race cars...he's going to look at making up a halfway house silencer...sort of mid way between the Librands and the standard Morgan one to see if we can make the Sigma engine sound a bit more sporty without being over noisy at high revs.

Strange, I use 200 cells catalysts (from Orbisoud, French manufacturer) for more than 2 years on my Plus 8 which was always near the limit value and I got my "Contrôle Technique" (which is equivalent to the MOT) a lot more easily than with the original 400 cells. Perhaps is it a question of quality ? BR. Daniel.
