Nice looking classic BMW R-series twin in the backgound - just to keep on topic!

I lost two glasses on mine and then another one broke under severe cold

All of the glasses were glued using Morgan's specified glue, which is a bi composant

I was so unhappy with the issue that I went to my local body shop and discussed the matter

They used Sikaflex adhesive which requires to carefully bake the glass and mount before assembly, and then, once the two parts are bonded together, to keep these in the oven for a little while

Their views is that the adhesive used by Morgan have no chance whatsoever to work properly

I had no problem with Sikaflex for the last two years, despite some extreme cold and extreme hot conditions

When I had a Max, now owned by Mr Tony, I did not have any problems at all with the rear windows which were glued. I did not have the bolted glass fitted, despite pressure from the Works when it went in for service, as I do think that it does spoil the aesthetics.
Aeromax's solution with the Sikaflex seems to me to be the answer, if it has worked successfully.

I noticed the BMW R too Graham......I'd hate to admit my eye went to that first!

Aeroman,as you have owned an aeromax would you in your opinion have the bolts fitted to my rear windows or just leave them as they are?ive had a good look at them and they don't seem to have any visible defects in the bonding areas,I wouldn't fancy driving the car and the windows pop out,I was at dmats house and he showed me the windows in his max .....doesn't give you much confidence ?

I think the way to look at this is that if they pop, it will be at the most inconvenient time & place possible. So probably dark, wet & windy. Therefore if you chose not to have bolts, carry some coping gear - plastic sheet & gaffer tape at the very least.

Hi, MMC fitted the Mark II glue solution at a service, but we did quite a number of tours to France in it and it got used during the UK winter as well, as long as no salt on the roads, and we had no problems with windows popping at all. Rich who bought the car has not had the bolts fitted, and whilst they do resolve the problem I think as I said above that it spoils the aesthetic.

I know that one of the famous members of the forum had trouble with his AeroMax windows dropping out and has had the bolts fitted, so it's really down to personal choice. If I still had an AeroMax I would certainly investigate the baked-on Sikaflex solution proposed by 'aeromax' before getting them bolted. HTH.

You need to carefully look at the place where the aluminium hinges are glued. All failures happened to me there, and I had no troubles with the 'hook' that go into the latches. It seems that extreme heat is transmitted trought the glass to the aluminium plate which can get 'twisted' by the heat and will create an abnormal pressure

Looking from the outside, should you see any sort of 'bubble', then the glue is on its way to break and your windows will get loose.

In some cases, you can see the glass delaminating

For as long as you don t open the window, they are stuck in place by the hinges hooks, even if the glue is gone on the main plate. The solution then is to have several strong rislan and link the two hinges from inside the car. It will pull the springed hinges back to place and the window will go flat as the pressure on the spring loaded hinges is blocked by the rislan

however, the window will no longer be flush or watertight

When the glue from the hinge is gone DO NOT open the window: the latches will open and the springed hinges will push your window away. They will damage the bodywork when falling

I drove once from Nice to Milan with one of the windows off, and lost another in Rome on my way back to Paris. Really annoying but even at very high speeds (In excess of 150 MPH on Italian motorways) it wasn t much more noisy that normal

But it was summer time........

When you re-glue, do ensure the aluminium plate is perfectly flat. A bit of machining was necessary on one of them. I also got the edges slightly grinded to avoid sharp angles that could break the glass. I also got the screw holes machined in a bigger diameter but that was done so that the new hole was marginally higher than the original ones. It helps to ensure the windows are perfectly watertight. On some cars, there was water ingress which was only resolved by the factory in putting a few spacers between the roof and the electric latches. It is a poor engineering solution and redrilling the aluminium brackets and the hinges is much more elegant as you don t need the spacers that are slightly visible

Thanks for that information....if the car has to be returned to Morgan to have the windows bolted,is this a cost to the customer or does Morgan cover the costs ??

at my guess Morgan could be covering the cost, as mine has gone up to the factory today before i take pocession, for the very reason you are discusing, if it was the resposibility of the owner i think SGT would be attemting this themselves in there workshops !
