During routine maintenance on my 2011 Plus 4 (49k miles), I noticed several strands broken away from the throttle cable at the TB end. The bowden cable wraps around a grooved ring and is secured back on itself by means of a crimped ferrule. I reckon that a weakness was introduced with the application of the crimp as it was at that end where strands were broken. A call to two local dealers, plus Uncle Melvin revealed none in stock. Factory enquiry revealed that this item is no longer available! “Car builder solutions” to the rescue but their ready made cables were looking a cm or so too short BUT with their “CRKIT” costing just £8, an easy fix was obtained.
This kit is a small tin containing two generously long flexibles of different diameters plus a selection of nipples. The shocking bit was when I removed the old cable, there were only three strands left at the pedal end! Using the thicker of the two spare cables to match the original, I had to lightly grind off the edges of the factory ferrule by just a few thou to get it to fit snuggly in the shackle at the pedal end. (Without doing that, it was fouling the pedal lever such that the clevis pin wouldn’t go in.) At the TB end, I used one of the universal screw down nipples which I had to open out the hole very slightly, to allow two thicknesses of cable to go through when it was wound round and back on itself.
So it’s worth a close look now and again. If you peer down under the bonnet at the pedal end, you can just see a cm of flexible where it leaves the bulkhead and enters the adjuster. Thats where the strands had failed. The TB end of course is obvious, but who takes a close look?

Forgot to say, (though fairly obvious) when inspecting the pedal end, you need to have the pedal depressed a little to expose the section of cable that is normally hiding inside the adjuster when at rest.
