Yep I agree with Arwyn! Years ago I was a fan of hammerite when it was probably the best option available at that time but its always been problematic to apply and you really can't guarantee there is no porosity! It also doesn't wear well. There are really good enamel and acrylic options available now and yes an acid etch primer really will prep the surface too, If I had to use Hammerite it would only be the smoothrite aerosol as the brush option is also patchy when applied!

There is also a rattle can option of an epoxy paint that I have found excellent you just pull and twist the ring pull on the base and shake to fully mix then you have about 20 minutes to apply. only downside is you can't save any paint not used in the can but boy does it do a good job!

I have always found Hammerite to be fine on solid items that are not going to be subjected to impacts. It is brittle once fully hardened and susceptible to stone chips etc.

I happily use the smooth Hammerite on my steel garden gate but not on a car.

Sewin, Eastwood 2K Duraspray is an epoxy aerosol having the activator blending at the nozzle. So, after use, clear the nozzle in the normal way and use again in the furure. All info taken from Eastwood and I have not used the product as yet, but it sounds just the job.

[quote=1854sailor]Picked up the header from the coating company. Aluminum-Ceramic high temperature...

Great move Sailor! It is the very best treatment one can do for exhaust pipes, and avoids the problems with stainless steel (discolors and brittle when the wrong grade [often] is used), or exhaust wrapping. nono

I have used the same coating on one of my cars for the last 27 years. It will soon go opaque but stays as effective. The non-chrome ones stay the same color. For some reason, ceramic coating is less commonly in the UK...possibly regulatory stuff. It can be done, but it is more difficult to find people to do it and the prices are high I metalized those on my UK Plus8s. They stayed perfect but the effect was merely aesthetic. Pic below.

One fellow in the UK might have been ahead of all of us. Rob Wells, racer, race preparer (incl.for Charles Morgan), dealer and co-founder of Librands. His bespoke Plus 8s racer exhaust is below.

Have been considering getting Morton's three branch headers ceramic coated although not cheap. Reasons are efficiency, cosmetic, no more polishing and protection, with multiple colour finishes available. No problems finding companies to do it in the UK. Cerakote have several agents with my nearest at Maldon. Click below for more info.

What Richard is the cost? What benefits do you see over stainless?

Thanks JMcL, That seems the ultimate solution. It really is so good a paint product I was happy to waste some if the job required it so as to get that durable and professional finish! I'll definitely be trying these though!

As a user yourself I'm sure you are aware of the dangers of using such paints but should others be reading this I think we should include that a mask is of paramount importance as the aerosol in the air will harden in your lungs if breathed in, yes this precaution goes for any paint spray product but you really do not wish to inhale epoxy paint so never think its just a quick job and I'm outside so all will be fine.

Forgotten exact figure John but somewhere around £500 for the pair. Benefits as above. Stainless discolours easily and needs heavy duty polishing to get back to something presentable. Spent hours keeping some sort of finish on my M3W headers despite using blueing remover.
