Seeing the wake still streaming out from the stern after the collision I wouldn't rule out mechanical failure

Thanks for posing Keith, It's easy to forget but he was a very good driver, competing in the Monte several times, I really enjoyed his 'Tomorrows World' on our tiny B&W tv

Does look as though the prop/drive is running astern even after the collision.
Without seeing more of the lead up to the incident it's difficult to see what they were actually intending to do.
