I've just bought a five year old Lexus RC coupe to replace my one year old previous car.

The lack of bells, whistles, and various other "driver aids" interfering when I least expect, (or want) them, is refreshing to say the least.

The fact that the car has another five years warranty makes me feel even more pleased with my purchase and I won't be rushing to buy another new car any time soon.

What Gambalunga says ties in with what I was told by a JLR employee. At the height of the IC crisis, people were given new cars because JLR had absolutely no spare parts to hand out. In some cases used parts were re-used.

Then they wonder why the theft rate went through the roof?

Any chance you had your seatbelt on? IIRC, an Audi I had in the past would do as you describe but only if I had my seatbelt on however, with my belt off, it wouldn't. Newer ones in fact put the car in park.

My Mrs tried to reverse the car into a space on the side of the road to park, but the car slammed the brakes on because I was standing on the pavement next to the space. I had to move so she could pull in......

I've had that as well. Is it a VW Group vehicle? I haven't tested it recently but in a past vehicle the car tapped the brakes when I was reversing and it thought I was getting too close to the bushes behind me, which at the time a new 'feature'. My passenger noticed and to show him again I reversed a bit more to confirm it's operation. Well, at the time, it was programmed to only do it once and if the driver ignores it, be it on his head. On my head it was as I backed deeply into the bushes....in Germany, at VW HQ in Wolfsburg, in front of many bystanders. I got out and clapped

The ID.5 had this as well but was tied into cross traffic alert. It was slam the brakes hard at times when nothing was to be seen!

It was suggested to me, by someone in the insurance industry, that the primary reason for increases in Range Rover / Land Rover premiums is the rapid rise in theft to order due to JLR stopping sales to Russia. The vast majority are being taken by professional gangs and shipped outside the UK to 'customers' unable to purchase them direct.

Yes probably also true.

A neighbour who looks after one of the JLR reseller chains informed me that they were constantly being offered “available” parts by unknown numbers to help them over the last twelve months. They took a couple of them up to see what they could gain access to and report back to JLR HQ to assist. The reply was we can get anything you need in up to 48 hours!
