I used to live near Ross and regularly drove down that way. From Ross I'd head to Abergavenny, either across country on the B4521 through Skenfrith (really nice pub there on the bridge next to the castle), or on the A40 south past Monmouth and up through Raglan. Then the A465 Heads of the Valleys road - it's modern and fast, reasonably scenic itself but you can come off at any point and find nice places to visit. Blaenavon is worth a stop. Once you get down past Merthyr you can loop off via the A4109 at Glynneath if you have time, down through Crynant to Swansea. Once through Swansea pretty much everywhere is lovely. I'd not recommend stopping at either Merthyr or Neath, too urban, but anywhere else is nice enough, people friendly, and in places it is like going back 50 years.

A465 !!! Currently a massive roadworks that has been going on for a few years. A lot of temporary roads/roundabouts as the contractors move about. It isn’t what it used to be ! I did it last September en route to Windermere and Scotland. It certainly isn’t fast as the roadworks and 50 zones slow you. It is ok but not scenic...there are some very impressive bridges being built though. The Abergavenny end is ok having been the early rebuild section. From Hirwaun south is normal.
If you want scenic then Abergavenny on the A40 is better with options to branch off.

Mumbles is a decent place. Gets busy at times but access to Gower not too bad.

Loved the B4521 - sun shining, lovely road (this is why we have Morgans) hardly any traffic so tearing down the dotted line upto ‘Big Pit’ mining museum. Then relied on the satnav to Gower - sospan was right about the A465 - motorist hell while they turn it into a motor way by the looks of it.

Farewell to a brooding Mumbles - back up the Wye valley to Monmouth - roof up time probably!

Have a good journey home.
If I didn’t have a busy week I’d have offered a guided tour of Gower.
Stuff on every day so no Morgan runs. Noggin tonight so will take the Morgan.
