Hi, can anyone tell me what gearbox was used on a 2002 4/4, with the 1800cc black top Ford Zetec engine? I am hoping to change the gearbox oil so it would probably help to know in what other Ford vehicles the gearbox was used and what oil was recommended. The MMC owners handbook recommends "FMT only". Thanks.

I believe it's the Ford MT75 2 wheel drive box used in Sierra and Scorpio II.

I have had good results using 1 790 199 Ford 75w-90 BO in my MT75 box in my 2011 car. You will need 2 litres as it takes about 1.3 litres to fill to filler lip. I had quite a conversation at a Ford Transit service station. Apparently Ford are aware of the “notchyness” of that gearbox & have worked on improving the oil

Can I suggest Castrol Transmax 75w-90 with smoothdrive technology. If It's just the the notchy-ness of the MT-75 box this should sort it! Also if you can get underneath the car you can reach up and clean the remote linkage selector of old grease and accumulated grit, then with the selector in a forward then rearward position grease the selector shafts. You really don't have to strip out the car, seats and tunnel, to achieve this as most will tell you to. Rater by feel and some vision! Another thing to do is to check the quality of the clutch fluid, If it's dark coloured or even black its stuffed, even if it looks reasonable but its old it is probably contaminated so change it! These three things should sort it out! Not sure if you have an external slave cylinder or a concentric version. Easy bleeding the external version but not the concentric slave. PM me if you have a concentric slave !
The MT-75 gearbox is a stunning box especially in it's rear drive configuration. I was working for Ford during the Cosworth development era and this is the box in the Cosworth Sierra's and in its MTX configuration, fitted in the Cosworth escort/ ST Focus range. This box will not let you down and, have you ever heard a Cosworth driver complain about them? I don' think so! When you get it right, like all Ford boxes it is a stunning positive selection and you will feel it go click! click! as you select the gear. When cold it might present some reluctance to go into first gear, just select second and then first after it all lines up!
Ford Lodexol oil went through several improvements but believe me it has nothing on the Castrol Transmax. Make sure you get the correct one as I have stated, there's several versions and its easy to select the wrong one! Finally before the test drive sit in the car and go through the gear selections with the engine off, Play for 10 minutes or so and you will soon feel your work starting to pay off then go and have fun! You are about to be amazed! My MT-75 takes 1.7 lt of oil as stated in the handbook!. 2010 car.
