I've been having problems with the handbrake not locking on, so decided to investigate. I removed the handbrake and found the pawl looked a bit worn. A light regrind of the flat which engages with the quadrant seems to have solved the problem. It was just a long winded process removing the seats and the tunnels to get to the handbrake lever but it did give me the opportunity to grease the UJs and the clutch mechanism.

I had the same problem, and executed the same fix. It sadly didn't last.

I'd strongly recommend anyone else attempting this repair, that they buy a new rack. They are not expensive. If you have removed parts to get here, repairing both the rack and pawl is the way to go.

I replaced the quadrant rack last year, but the pawl had been incorrectly made so I had to use the original one. I noticed that the pawl can rotate slightly which can prevent it locking properly. A slight twist of the button straightens the pawl and then it locks. I guess a slightly longer locking screw which locates the pawl may help, just didn't have one handy.

I had the same issue when I tried to replace the pawl. It wouldn't fit in the hole. Used the old one with the new teeth and all was good.

It's been many years since I had the facilities to do that frown
At least you get it right, which MMC who supplied Mervyn couldn't do. The one Mervyn supplied had the flat in the wrong place.

Drove out to a country pub at Saxted in the Suffolk countryside for lunch with Richard (RichardV6) and Gary (Hawki), so the conversation probably strayed onto bikes at some stage, then home for an oil and filter change.
