p.s.This on the day we shut down our last coal fired power station and Port Talbot Steel works.
I know this is a risky comment, but personally I think this is quite sad
I've got no great problem with shutting down coal-fired power stations, but the Port Talbot shutdown is a tragedy - not least because if there had been a decent bit of strategic planning at Tata (and the Government) this would have been foreseen and been planned for. Converting to electrical-fired steel furnaces should have been started long ago, along with training and coaching the workforce.
The idea that the UK should no longer produce domestic steel is just plain bonkers. We have enormous economic opportunities to exploit green technologies and yet we seem to be content to piss it all away.

Spain Unleashes World’s First High-Speed Hydrogen Train Spain have just smashed it in the green transport game. The legendary train builders Talgo have rolled out the world’s first high-speed hydrogen-powered train, giving the rest of Europe something to chase.

And part of the Spain's hydrogen success story (helped by a sunny climate)
A production capacity of 600,000 tonnes of green hydrogen in 2021. A target of 600 MW electrolyser capacity by 2024, increasing to 4 GW by 2030. Spain accounting for half of Europe’s growth in dedicated renewable capacity for hydrogen production. Iberdrola commissioning the largest plant producing green hydrogen for industrial use in Europe, with a 100 MW photovoltaic solar plant and a 20 MW electrolytic hydrogen production system.
Not everything is rosy in the Green industry in Sweden especially regarding the once rising star Northvolt battery production

That is a sobering read, especially the Health and Safety aspect.
The Spanish train featured on one of Portillo's travel programs, my wife watches them and called me through as she knows I have an interest in the area.

What I find alarming about the Northvolt situation, is that this at the manufacturing stage tthey are having real issues, even with vast capital investment in new manufacturing processes and techniques. I dread to think what is happening in the Chinese battery industry if Northvote experience is anything to go by.
What is it going to be like at the other end of the battery life cycle when they come to recover and hopefully recycle all the materials in the batteries.
Like nuclear energy the savour of the 50's till someone had to start dealing with the resultant hazardous waste.

Yes it's hard to understand why with that level of investment they could not progress the project unless it is mirroring the recent episodes of Industry (BBC1) currently running a similar story of upselling the green idea prior to a stock market launch and falling..
Like you I fear the mess the Chinese especially, but others too will leave behind once the reclaimable items have been recovered if they do follow that up.
I was disgusted to read several years back now that some of our nuclear waste is incarcerated in concrete with the 50 gallon drum forming the mould and them dumped in deeper areas of the North Sea I believe. Short term gains for long term ecological disasters so Political ideas in action
I feel ashamed at what we are leaving behind for our children and grand children, not a good feeling at all.

We can on a clear day see the distant Windscale/Sellafield site, with the BAE Barrow in Furness ship yard building glinting in the sun across Morecambe Bay, competing with Don Quixote style windfarms proliferating in the bay, reflecting the sun obscuring more of the beautiful Cumbrian hills in the background.
We tend not to eat locally caught fish around here.
The Chinese are digging the deepest mine shaft ever into the earth mantel, maybe that's where they are going to put all the waste.
