Way out in the middle of the Mediterranean we were treated to the sight of a beautiful kestrel flying around the ferry. My immediate thought was that it must be migrating and was hitching a ride with the ship.
We saw it several times when we went out on deck. We also saw a few small birds, like finches or sparrows.

At a certain point 2 small birds flew past me and dived to hide under the life-rafts. Unfortunately for one it did not hide well enough and the kestrel stooped on it in a moment. Before I could get a photo it flew off with its prey somewhere into the superstructure of the ship.

It seemed to know its way about the ship quite well and I am now wondering if it is a permanent resident 🤔

Very interesting Peter, we have a Sparrow Hawk and Kestrel that visit our garden and boy they are impressively ruthless with the birds we feed there.

Sparrow Hawks esp the larger female are awesome.

Have witnessed one rip a fat pigeon to pieces on my lawn in short order while glaring at me!

I have seen a Sparrow Hawk pluck and devour a Collared Dove by our bird bath and he ignored us, amazing their self belief and survival instinct so strong and so quick on devouring it all other than feathers and feet..
