While removing the car battery I noticed two thinner wires attached in parallel with the big wires.
The thin ones disappear in a cable harness with some others (black ones). This is then routed into the passenger area under the carpet to this "black box". It is attached to the floor under the passenger seat. Not sure if this is original, probably a previous owner has fitted it as an aftermarket device.
I have no clue what this is, maybe someone recognises it ? Will need to remove the seat to get access to it.

I do not know what it is but my immediate thought was some kind of security tracker; in the UK it isn't uncommon for insurance companies to ask for them to be fitted to vehicles which have a value above a certain level. However, these are normally hidden quite well and thus I doubt this would be the control unit for such a system. However, if you have any paperwork for a tracking device, in the history file, this could be worth looking into. On a side note, I purchased an old car, which had such a device fitted but was no longer in use. Over time I noticed a battery drain and managed to trace it back to the defunct tracker. Although the previous owner had chosen to not renew the annual subscription, the device was still installed and drawing constantly from the battery of the car; not an issue when the car was in use but quickly depleted the battery when it was not!

Helps if you give the car model and year when asking these kind of questions.

Any other wires/ connectors? Looks like power input from the battery so is it a stand-alone unit or have other wires?

Thanks for all the replies. Removed the unit now from the car (2006 /+4). However, I still don't know what it is. Ebay is full of such devices but without clear description what is does. Most likely it is some kind of tracking device. The red & black wires are connected to the battery, the white one seems to be an antenna. It consumes about 40mA and certainly will drain the battery if the car is not used for a longer period. If disconnected from the battery the unit will survive for some time using the internal battery.

I can't find a data sheet I'm afraid though for it - so no idea which phone it went with. 2005 ish technology though, so perhaps not surprising....
