This is my solution



I know, if they tear off the handle.... But then it's not that easy to carry, Pretty heavy.
It is mainly for the peace of mind of Mrs. M..
My thoughts, who the F.. is interested in dirty underwear.

When we went to Southern Ireland last August the good lady took 6.5 Kgs and mine was 5Kgs including the grips for the week and still came back with some unused, tis not difficult and the added bonus of stuffing it in your overhead locker and not having to wait for reclaim tother end and beat the queue for the hire car.

My solution is to have a 4 seater. Can fold down rear seats and can fit two large suitcases, plus room behind the front seats and between the rear seats. All nicely hidden below the tonneau. Have even used her to move house a couple of times!

I use these too and they work very well.

I would say that when travelling to Provence (for example) which is a regular trip, I rarely leave a loaded car far from view.

I bought this battered old leather trunk from Etsy for £120



Now affectionally named 'Old Maynard', for security I fitted a pair of Squire Old English padlocks



To secure the trunk to Monty's luggage rack I used a series of Hiplok Z Lok cable ties, these reusable steel cable ties are looped through the trunk's steel bars and are extremly dificult to cut, being under the case they are also very dificult for a theif to access. Finally and for additional security, I looped my ABUS bicycle cable lock through the steel bars under the trunk and around the rack frame, then secured both ends of this thick hardened cable in the Squire Old English pad locks.

You can see Old Maynard's flat steel bars built into the trunk in the above 'beer and snacks run' image, they effectively create a steel cage, this is then wrapped in double skinned heavy buffalo hide.



Old Maynard must be at least 100 years old, the leather he's made from is extremely thick, I put 4 litres of neatsfoot oil and 1.5 litres of lanolin into Old Maynard over a week of daily aplications to bring the leather back and to ensure the trunk is fully waterproof, we tested this on a trip to the Spa Classic last year when the rain was biblical and our luggage remained perfectly dry.

The idea is Old Maynard stays locked to the rack for the full duration of Monty's touring trips, I just unlock the two padlocks and lift Old Maynard's lid to access my camping gear and seperate squishy bags where I keep my cloths. Monty has been left overnight with the empty Old Maynard locked to the rack many times, and he's never been broken into.

Old Maynard has almost certainly been around the world many times in his long life, and probably strapped to the deck of a steam liner in all wathers during his extensive travels, I've just given the old boy a new life of adventures securely locked on the back of Monty the Morgan



I wanted a capacious, waterproof and secure luggage solution with the correct period look... I think I achieved all my goals with Old Maynard

I guess it's not just the art of traveling light but also the art of washing or "dhobi" that is lost. This is the luggage we carried plus the stuff inside the car for two going 8 weeks on the road. We used BootBag as well, great product easy to use and weather proof.

I use Kanulock as per one of the comments above but *in addition* I also wrap each of our waterproof bags in a pacsafe net which also locks to the rack:
