Sorry not rubbish John although I admit results did vary. It just makes plain sense to me why dedicated LED headlamp design requires projector optics to provide accurate and sharp dip beam cutoff, often mandated with a self levelling system. This is way above the relatively crude focussing by a plain reflector and outer lens dedicated to halogen light source.
This in the light of present lobbying to control dazzling from poorly set up systems.

Richard but then surely it should also apply to cars pre 1986. That was what I meant. For sure the sealed units are better but the bulbs I had were designed to handle theold style bowl and only fiited one way to give a flat beam.

The LED bulbs I put in the Landy give the exact same pattern as the old H4s but with a more sharply-defined cut off, and although they are a bit brighter, it's the colour temperature that gives the real benefit in my view. I am sure the more modern full LED replacements would be even better but I like the classic look of the old headlight lenses. It's not like I do much night driving anyway and I'm quite happy to slow down a bit when I do.

I bought proper (expensive) tested H4 LED bulbs, fitted one side only and took to local MOT place to see what the beam tester thingy revealed - same as Tim's description above, in fact I was advised to slightly raise the Dip adjustment on the Mini
So the '67 Mini and '49 Three legger run H4 LED, but the 2018 Roadster's not allowed...balmy !

Regarding the bulbs: It makes sense to check where the screw for the chrome rings is located. I wanted to change the lamp on a trip but needed an angled screwdriver as the indicator was in the way.

This is an excellent point. Teng tools do lovely little ratchet driver set which is ideal for carrying in the car, covers all the common bit types and has a ΒΌ" socket driver too. Mine lives in the car permanently. https://www.tecproducts.co.uk/works...-drive-socket-bit-set-29-pcs-p1102/s3366

Hamwich you are absolutely right about it being a great little tool and you will wonder how you managed without one when it's sitting with your tools.
Chrome bezels on my MOG are slightly offset from a lower central position and allow me to use a standard screwdriver avoiding the indicator assembly.
