Indeed, and those owners I know who have had them really like them. Not to my taste though, I've never seen anything wrong with a Peli Storm case strapped to the rack.

Maybe you're referring to 'Old Maynard', he's a turn of the century leather trunk made from water buffalo hide by the Colonial India Luggage Company around 100 years ago. 'Old Maynard' almost certainly had many adventures travelling the world many times over during his long hard working life, and seems perfectly content to help Monty & I out during in his retirement.





Once you free yourself from the idea that whatever you put on the rack must be removed for every overnight stop, and replace it with the concept of a semi-permanent trunk that acts as a lockable boot, you'll be amazed how practical your Morgan will become on a long touring holiday.

For me the period correct look is extremely important, a Trad is very much in the vintage aesthetic and I would wager most of us have made the choice to drive such an eclectic car because we enjoy this unique identity our Morgans provide? For me therefor, if one then straps a ghastly modern suitcase on the back, it completely spoils so much of what the car is all about.



'Old Maynard' is completely in keeping with Monty's vintage look, and he hides my modern bags inside in a perfectly dry environment, even in very inclement weather. However, typically I tour with two bags behind the seats on the parcel shelf that hold all our cloths, with 'Old Maynard' taking care of our bulky camping gear, once pitched up 'Old Maynard' is free to take all our shopping when we head out for supplies at the local supermarket.



'Old Maynard' is a proven solution that works, but one that also looks the part, he's also enjoyed many compliments along the way as he enjoys his retirement romping across the European Continent on the back of Monty

I try not to have anything going on the rack unless absolutely necessary. I measured the exact size behind the seats and bought the biggest wheeled soft trolley bag I could fit in there. £30 or so off EBay from memory. One bag in, one bag out. Some people like the fitted luggage though!

I tried to google old Maynard ... unfortunately without success. Is there an address where such a case is available Monteque ?
I've been looking for an old waterproof case for a long time.

Ian thank you so much for posting that joyful tasteful time capsule, I disagree with you though as I suspect were they to catch sight of it they would be so proud of the Weggmeister - this is a logarithmic function related to a given timeline so much bollocks is spoken around the topic of Selfies creating memories with minimal effort and talent or taste (we won’t visit that area) nowadays but you having spent a lot of effort creating a fabulous day out for them that will last beyond their lifetime. Well done 😎🙏

I lack the basic ingredient to achieve this result, all I would like to add is the photographs of my late Father of he and I in a Tiger Moth with me airborne in the back seat is just the best picture I have, those that have a PPL and been taught by their Wartime Spitfire pilot CFI will understand the significance of the snap and seating arrangement. As a very young lad to get there was just an embarrassment to have the moment captured….

Richard, thank you for your kind observations. Yes, we have been very fortunate to have had some memorable times at Goodwood in its heyday.

I haven't always been lucky with the photography, though. This was the Saturday evening the following year. If I'd had my camera ready just two seconds earlier when the Spitfire was directly overhead, what a glorious picture that would have been!

It just makes me want to smile the one with the lads looking not totally into the idea of a picture (just my feeling).

Your other picture tells a loud story to me - the days end and as the carpark is emptying, had the Spit been captured it would have added to the atmosphere.

When my son in law and I attend we make our way back over the pedestrian bridge to the fairgrounds, Butlins etc and sit down and have a couple of pints and enjoy the music and dancing until close of play, the atmosphere there is chilled and we have met some lovely like minded folk we still keep in touch with.

Coming over that bridge at sunset time they put a few kites up to fit in and build the feeling for the area and if you are lucky you get the shot.

I think a lot to do with the closing speed and your elevation hence being on the bridge buys you a fraction of a second.

The luggage thing is all tied into the road trip and the number of days. Because having a single stop is very different to multiple stops, and so the number of bags and 'convenience' matters.

I use the following:

Morgan luggage: which comprises a large Tourista waterproof case, a badly fitting mohair cover and a zip on boot bag. Although the case has wheels, the size and the cover make it unwieldy, and although it takes most of the luggage, leaving space behind the seats, on multiple stops it's too much trouble. The boot bag however is invaluable and gets used whatever else we take, because it holds all our walking gear, including boots and poles

Overboard waterproof duffel bag: This will take 60+% of the Tourista case. We call it the body bag because when we lift it off the rack, one at each end, that's what it looks like. It fits on the rack using its own integral fasteners, and fits easily with the boot bag. Better than the case for frequent stops.but also unwieldy.

Morgan leather holdall: Must be used with something else, and fits behind the seats. Convenient for regular stops, but limited capacity.

Berhaus duffel bag: Very well made but not waterproof. Will fit on the rack but would need a plastic bin liner in wet weather. This has about 60% capacity of the Overboard bag, but will fit behind the seats with the Morgan leather holdall, leaving just the boot bag on the rack. This is our chosen option for the end of next week, when we will be doing our early season Scottish Highlands tour. Three stops in the first four days means that we need convenience, with fast loading and unloading, especially when its pouring with rain. We also take a suit bag, but keep it quite thin, because that must be doubled over to fit behind the seats, plus a few more squashy bags, most of which stay in the Morgan overnight.

I use a cockpit storm cover when touring. I do have the big one which covers the bonnet , and more of the wings, but you can't fit that to a dirty and wet Morgan, because the wind will abrade the paintwork. The cockpit storm cover works much better on a wet and dirty car, and I can often be found in the bathroom after overnight rain, drying off the storm cover, before rolling it into the bag and placing it in the passenger footwell.
