Hello to all

I’ve been reading the forum since buying a 2005 Roadster back in 2020 and have always managed to find the answers to my queries.

Now on holiday in France and have gained a knocking noise from the rear. Having removed the tool tray the top bush on the near side shock absorber has broken up

Can you tell me what size it is and where I might find some?

I’m not back to the UK for another week

Huw, you will most likely need to clean up the damper paintwork and see if you can find the make, reason being the inner diam that fits over the pin will be standard but the outer diam of the rubber will most likely be specific to that top ring on the damper

Well U if they are original shocks I'd probably think about a new set, they are 25 years old now and even if they have some functionality left its odd's on that both sides will be different. A good set of spax adjustable will sort you out and I think you'll find the improvement worth the cost and effort. Cain at wolf performance has just developed a rather tasty option too and they are very competitive price wise..... they weren't only designed on a drawing board either!

I have Cain's shockers, highly recommended much better than my previous AVO's

I've just had the red coloured bushes of my rear AVO shock absorbers break up and fall off. I replaced them with a pair of Spax adjustables from SSL via Librands with an improved ride. Well worth doing.

Here’s an update

Still in France and after a couple of days with the knocking we stopped at a B&B who after a chat produced a bush from a MG which more or less fitted but has removed the knocking noises

Ubiquitous, to avoid disappointment make sure you get the correct size for your car. Check compression length & extension length.
Reason is if you fit the wrong size, you will find either very little movement left for compression or on extension the car will reach the max extension before reaching the chassis bump rubber. Obviously in both cases the internal shock absorber stops get beaten to destruction, & exerts rather a lot of pressure on those bushes.

Yep icepack is spot there, I'd recommend further that you either buy them from SSL or Cain at Wolf Performance then you won't have issues with the operational length of the shock as they know by car exactly what is required.

Just as an aside, don't measure your current shock open and closed lengths as quite a few cars that have had changes have the wrong shocks fitted!
I'd also suggest that you obtain and fit a set of Rog's bump stops. They are not just bump stops but also act as suspension assisters, stopping/slowing the suspension which would otherwise bottom out in quite a gentle manner yet in normal suspension travel range have no effect. I can honestly say that these were the best thing I did to my Mog and that was when I had ten year old original shocks still fitted, I later fitted adjustable shocks from spax and setting them at four clicks up from the lowest setting found my plus 4 rode fantastically well, an unimaginable desire prior to this set up!
