Sorry John, I did not respond to your post before now, as I had gone off elsewhere, fortunately others jumped in .....

One Morganeer I know of who covered considerably more miles than most seem ever likely to, used to just have the wings repainted...I suspect that as his wings were a different colour from the body would have masked any shading difference.

When I got the S2 many many years ago it had a quite extensive kit.
The front has taken many a hit from stones and flies and cleans up well despite it being early gen plastic.
It has coloured a little now but you do have to look to see it. Most people don't.

The Coupe came with it from the factory, awkwardly it needed a few resprays due to some issues and they had to reapply it after each respray which added quite a bit of time. It probably also cost the factory quite a bit more as a result.

I declared it on my insurance and did not get any uplift. I suspect Simons comments around reinstatement costs are true.

I think your friend has been following the wrong threads in my personal opinion. I would rate Ceramic as a lot better than 90% of conventional polishes, especially for bird poop from what I have seen. If only because the prep that tends to get done for Ceramic means more time is spent on it. There are still some pants quality ceramics mind you.

One other aspect which may or may not have relevance to polishes, PPF etc.etc.etc., is that perhaps modern water based paints may not be as resistant to damage as the older seemingly more toxic paint two pack systems. My old Mog is painted with two pack, which was still available last time I tried, though only for use on classic vehicles, not sure what like the availability may be in more recent times..?

This is a quote from my CX build book - "Finally, two coats of ceramic clearcoat are applied before the panels are checked for any paint defects and polished"

That's a bit odd. Paint defects would be sorted and polished THEN the final ceramic added to " perfect" paintwork. The factory final inspection bay is where they look for and polish any defects. If already coated then that removes it. I'm up there next week so will ask. I think the ceramic coating is an extra when specc'ing a car?
The ceramic is basically a micro thin coating designed to last longer than waxes. You can wax a ceramic treated finish though, some detailing fanatics do so with waxes designed to promote water beading/run-off for that extra finish.

My guess is that the "ceramic" is a misprint unless Morgan uses a clearcoat that has a ceramic additive. Clearcoat is a urethane or lacquer depending on the base coat...

Just remembered from years ago.... 2 pack paints had a colour coat and then a laquer coat for protection and shine. I remember spraying a car with them when helping my dad. It was back when cellulose paints were being replaced. We did respray a van that I bought with a new paint sample. The rep gave it as a test sample. A freebie! Permabel paint, grey and very glossy.

Sospan, from a dull memory the two pack systems followed on from cellulose and were potentially more injurious to health as they had isocyanate in their make up. Permobel was an ICI product name for their enamel paint which was generally used on commercial vehicles.. Cellulose and enamel paints were around at the same period in time, multiple coats of cellulose was the norm where the finish could be polished with T cut when dry to remove imperfections generally used for higher quality jobs and was quicker drying than enamel, which was a one coat material that could not be overcoated and would react if overcoated with it`s self even minutes after application, it was a one coat wonder that had high gloss straight from the gun and any imperfections in the finish were there to stay, as they could not be polished out. Two pack paints followed on where a hardner was mixed in with the colour and on sprayed together. All very different from today`s water based finishes, I gave up painting my cars before they arrived on scene..

What paint would I have used to hand paint ( even over the Fablon used on the sills) back in 1966 on a Ford Thames/Popular (?) van jointly ‘owned’ by me and my college mates?! Bit of Crown or ICI gloss white perhaps ? Happy days and thankfully not a job we repeated…….

The only paint job I did was in c.1971, a Fairthorpe Electron Minor (after I ran it into the back of a bus somewhat, honest !). I used a paint roller and Coach Paint, the results were much better than I would have feared. I subsequently sold the car and I believe the chassis is still hanging up in a barn somewhere in Somerset.
