I have PPF on my 2010 car, Installed by Williams in 2012. ITS not great to be honest in that it's a bit slapped on with some misalignment issues. TM is right when he says that improvements have been made and the new product is far more optically perfect, harder and self repairs with heat. Mine marks easily and the surface tears. However it is doing a job and that matters to me. It hasn't yellowed and looks ok at the moment but I will replace it at my local specialist in the near future as the new product is almost invisible!
Ceramic coatings...... well they are the dogs actually, they really do protect the paintwork leaving a really hard shiny finish and you won't get the micro scratching from cleaning. I have used it since GardX started supplying it and have had cars with it on for almost ten years and its still as good as the day it was applied!

Thank you all for the knowledgeable and reassuring feedback on PPF and ceramics, there seems a very clear consensus that these are worthy. I will inform my friend (who shall remain nameless but it's Tobias -- yes, you Tobias!) that he owes me a pint!

Just a little add on, If you go with ceramic, polish the body properly otherwise all imperfections will be locked in beneath the coating. If you get it professionally done it'll cost you north of £350. Now, its so easy to apply.. Basically there are two solutions that you apply with a sponge pad labelled 1 and 2. When ready you wipe on the first solution and when finished you wipe on the second solution straight on top. When that's dry just buff it off using a micro fibre cloth. Job done.
Look for GardX and you can get a full set on the Bay of E for between £25 an £40 including glass and interior treatment.
