Used to paint my Land Rovers with 'brush paint' although I was dead posh and used a foam radiator roller.

For my Morgan I was even more sophisticated and used Halfords rattle cans on my front drive.

TBM, I used to brush paint my m/cycle frames in the my bedroom in my parents council tenement flat, also burned holes in the carpet trying to put any kind of charge back into m/cycle battery. Building one bike in the room with another under the bed in bits...First car I painted was my bro in law`s Singer Gazelle, painted it with Peter`s Paint Pads... A kinda sponge like device.... Nah, not in my bedroom, but in a lock up... It turned out...... err..... a bit better than it was before, though just a bit...(-:

Back to rattle cans myself these days...(-:

Dulux Brilliant White transformed my Vitesse. From over the road it looked brilliant white.

Luddite, yes I remember the transition to two pack isocyanate paints. My dad retired not long after due to not wanting to work with them. Unfortunately he developed emphasemia so retired before having to use them, even with spray booths with clean air supply.
One thing he started to teach me was hand painting. The old Rolls Royce method. From memory, slightly thicker paint with good brushes, wet sanding between coats and final polishing.
Whenever we used cellulose it was finished by cutting back with Farecla cutting paste to take off the fresh sprayed look and blend in panels.
One job I had was prepping vans for a respray. Several vans from car size to big removal vans that a local company had. Rubbing down huge areas with wet and dry.....😱😄😥🖐🏻 skinless fingers, masking tape for protection....

My dad fully restored a Hansom Cab, including making new wheels. Hand painted but no special regalia! Pinstriped wheel rims and spokes with rubber tyres. I watched him doing the wheel pinstriping, I was aged about 6/7. The next year he showed me a Morgan he was refurbing. It stuck in my memory and influenced buying my first Morgan.
Funnily enough I found his Apprenticeship Indention papers last month while going through old paperwork. During his national service with RASC he worked on gun carriages and was at a couple of Royal Tournaments with the Royal Horse Artillery display team. They tried persuading him to stay on with promotion etc but he wanted to get back to Civvy Street.

From over the road it looked superb, but hand painting a car at the side of the road is not a very good idea. Flies appear...............

My mates wife painted their ageing Renault campervan with Dulux gloss. Minimum prep and it was improved by walking back away. They did a tour of Europe in it though.
