Whilst on a local Morgan club run my gear lever when shifting became rather wooly and a little hard to feel where i was in the box, something is obviously astray down there -I got home in pouring rain ok so I guess its get access into the tunnel and see what I can find, as I understood its all standard Land Rover engine and box ....?? Any ideas?

Bruce it’s a 99 model so it’ll be the R380 box - Murray’s car and mine are twins.

Thanks Bruce after looking about that is what I came up with too, and one of our local Plus 8 owners had a similar experience with the grub screw dropping out, hours to access and a couple of minutes to replace apparently -then put it all back together. So a bit busy at the moment with boat stuff it may have to wait till after Christmas.

Having had similar symptoms on my +4 with the same remote it is well worth replacing the rubber bushes (even if its the grub screw) when you have the gearbox cover off. I replaced mine with polyurethane, very cheap and easy once you have taken the interior out.
The gearbox cover is usually trapped in by the prop shaft cover, not a difficult job, just intrusive.
LT77 or R380 both have a similar remote with the same bushes.

I had the same problem, the nylon bushes in the remote linkage were breaking up. You need to get the transmission tunnel cover off then it’s an easy job to do - they’re LDV convoy parts!

You’ll need grub screw UYP500110 x 1 (I think, though I ordered 2)

I can’t find where I got the actual bushes from but will keep looking.

Ashcroft Transmissions have the bush - FTC2203, shift lever bush, but most Land Rover spares people should do them - they were hard to find when I did mine a couple of years ago but seem to be more widely available now.

As others have said read Gomog before doing anything. I found after doing mine it was very stiff for a while but it eased up with use.

I had the R380 on my Plus8. I had a failure of the " dust cover" part UKX3159. Basically a dome shaped part that had a tab for bolting to the frame of the gear link . It was a known weakness where the tab cracked due to fatigue/ repeated flex stress. A fix was to weld a small lug on the tab to beef it up. Mine broke but I managed to make a temporary lug/mount until I got it sorted.
New UKC3159.....unobtainable. Tried evrywhere until I found one by chance. Ashcroft, Rimmer etc but no luck. Had lugs welded before fitting . Replaced my " temp" fix after about 3 years. The R380 was used for several makes, inc Transits if I remember correctly. A potential market if someone could get a manufacture.
The other sloppiness cause could be perished rubber mounts on the gear linkage, mine were ok, As for the grub screw/spring.....mine was missing anyway. Didn't seem to be a problem.
Getting the UKC3159 good did make the gearchange much better.
That part number is embedded after so many searches.
