Certainly not planned yet. Whilst we think we know a possible route we are really open to suggestions and places to visit, stay and even eat ! Truth is we don’t even know which way round to do it and that also could depend on three separate visits to friends in France along the way . Sadly this will be in the Volvo as there is stuff to transport .

So London to Ljubljana, Ljubljana to Madrid for sons wedding in early August , Madrid through France to London
France route is more or less settled but whatever way round France will be in some of August. Assume the French still take off August and fill the roads??
Main holiday will be in parts of Italy, Austria and Slovenia but love visiting Southern Germany on route or when returning
Like to enjoy the trip from Slovenia to Spain rather than blasting through.
Love any input from wonderful, knowledgable, well travelled, bon vivants, foodies BUT especially TMers who know a bargain and value for money !
Best to all, MM
PS Hate road tolls but………if necessary

Go to Spoleto not to Tuscany. Visit the Sud Tyrol & go the back mountain passes.
Drive the Stelvio down into Italy.

Stay in Lenno on lake como in the Hotel Lenno & take the ferries everywhere

Rome & below driving is African with no real rules.

Simon, I have never started a new topic/thread(?) and I seem to have cocked up. I went to The Soapbox and wrote my message but somehow it says DealerTalk . Many apologies, perhaps it should or could be put in the right section as I would love to get recommendations and byway rather than highway routes through Italy and the South of France into Spain.
Again my apologies, MM

We are kicking off our my car club (CAAR GB) Autumn Rally in Ljubljana in early September for an 17 day drive through Slovenia and Croatia including some islands concluding on Lake Bled. PM me and I will share our route with you.

Ljubljana to Madrid and back to the UK it depends how many days you want to take. The none motorway directish route takes you past Venice into central northern Italy, south of Lake Garda (was very busy last August as I drove south to Verona) and Turin into France, Briancon, Gap. Route Napoleon nearby .Then Avignon, Camargue, Carcassone through Andorra (cheap fuel/beautiful mountains) then Spain. Head back UK via Pamplona, Bordeaux, La Rochelle, Le Mans.

I am sure others will add ideas.

Looks like a great trip in the offing. For the London to Ljubljana leg consider the “Romantic Road” down through Germany. You will visit many beautiful cities and towns, starting in Wurzberg, via Rothenburg ob der Tauber (think Chitty Chitty Bang Bang), down to Fussen and Schloss Neuschwanstein (think Disney Castle - its true Walt Disney modelled his trademark castle on this place !) - a great place to visit. From there head for Innsbruck and then choose a route through the mountains to Villach. If you have time, visit Lake Jasna - beautiful. Also just along the road is the Planica Nordic centre with huge Ski Jump slopes. In the summer they rig a zip wire from the highest one - you know you want to do it. ! From there to Ljubljana it is an easy drive - look out for the visible evidence of the tragic fighting in the wars with Croatia/Serbia etc. Ljubljana is a great city - worth getting the bus up to the castle and strolling back to the city. Slovenia is a beautiful country with very friendly people. Lake Bled is beautiful but very touristy. Lake Bohinj is stunning and not too far off your track. If you go into Croatia, (slightly more “edgy than Slovenia) but no real issues), the cost and the islands are wonderful. Zadar is beautiful, dont miss the “Sea Organ” - totally bonkers, and the Colosseum in Pula is very impressive.

Sorry everyone, cannot help myself in responding.

Chris, how did we miss each other in Somerset being 2 or 3 miles from each other. I would love to have bought you a drink or two and chatted.
Also I am thinking you are the brother I never had ! You travel our road . We think and agree on literally everything/place you mentioned . We even turned up at Rothenburg a couple of September ago to a costumed festival which was amazing Perhaps you even stopped at Europes biggest Mac turnover site (with log fire) near Innsbruck……..

Jasna is our daily late afternoon sunny stop off . Slovenes are funny. Second weekend in September , we are still sunbathing and Slovenes have decided it’s now Autumn or Winter and stroll in Heavy coats or ski jackets . My new knee is now over a year and I will be skiing the big hill in February. . Did the zip when it went in and we are avid fans of Ski Flying . Often the only Union Jack flying ……I even convinced many I was Eddie the Eagle……I printed a tee shirt pretending or suggesting and we were in the VIP area to add credence. If we cannot meet in the Helyar Arms we could meet at the Cow Ball in Bohinj ….!?

After 27 years of going to Slovenia we now only promote Slovenia to friends including TM, as Europeans now stop in SLO . They used to just drive through to Croatia. The last 5 to 8 years has seen unbelievable growth including lots of Chinese. Thankfully we know where to go to lose them.

If you have more info on special places in Croatia I would be grateful. We don’t know Croatia as well as Slovenia. If you go back to Zadar ( cheap flights) you should get a ferry/Cat to Premuda ! Less than 100 inhabitants and 100+ tourists .
Best to all, MM
