I have been informed by a highly respected Morgan man that he always uses Gear Oil applied by a grease gun for the top nipple and grease for the bottom one.
The pins on my 2008 4/4 are ready for changing at 17000 miles and I wondered whether this was a more effective way of prolonging their life in the future, my informant suggests that it will.
Advice appreciated and do please have a look at my blog in which I do attempt to promote our lovely marque. "http://onemanandhismog.blogspot.com"

Mine has had grease only for 15 years and they are the originals I beleive with over 35k driven.

That is an incredible mileage when both dealers and the factory suggest that replacement might be required after 16000 upwards, but will depend on the types of road surface travelled on.
Of course, interesting to note that you have used only grease in that period. Thanks for your reply.

On my previous 94 4/4 it had the traditional top oiler & lower grease nipple. I took it from 25 k to 55k & never changed the king pins.

Oil makes a bit of sense in the top nipple, simply because the drilling is tiny, and emerges above the upper bush. But oil will be more likely to drain away sooner, and some types of hypoy gear oil can affect bronze bushes. I think to change from grease to oil may not provide any benefit, simply because the grease already there will stop the oil penetrating between the upper bush & pin.
So if you fancy trying oil in the upper nipple, the time to do it is after a rebuild.

If the top bush is oiled and the bottom is greased I don't see any benefit when, in my experience, the bottom bush is the one that wears and in both cases this is being greased?

Has anyone tried fitting rubber gaitors such as used on off road motorbikes?

Oil in the top, there is a suggestion somewhere to use 120 weight, consistency of treacle? My car was modified to remove the top oiler fitting and replace with grease.
If you are changing KPs, go for hard chrome and make sure the bushes are those with the grease 'reservoir'.

Gaitors - various options Peter, though I wouldn't go for 'permanent' fit like fork gaitors.
Old innertube held with cable tie is one option.
Dave W's mohair are another. thumbs
On my old 4/4 I have split corrugated electrical tubing, again held with tie wraps. When this eventually cracks I have a pair of Dave W's mohair, bought to go on my +4, but retained when I sold the car smile . There are other options out there - someone is making leather variety, but they are pricey!

Cheers,
