Just been chatting to a pal who owns a 488 and also a 360. The latter is now on 217000 miles , original engine, no oil use. No significant repairs at all and of course no bore scoring or intermediate shaft issues laugh

Mine has gone because you cannot use serious performance on UK roads, even here in Wales. But such work as I did on the car showed a very high standard of build. .

I really dont know why people put up with Porsche problems hide

Reliability is a strange thing isn't it. Over the last 25 years or so I have had 5 Range Rovers, a DB9 a DB11 & Vantage, 2 Mercedes E Class a Lexus and a 911.

All the cars (except the DB9) were used as quite high mileage daily drives but it is only Range Rovers and Aston Martins that have never let me down. All the others left me stranded at some point, after which lengthy periods were required in dealerships to get them fixed.

So on the basis of these posts if you want reliable cars Ferraris, Range Rovers and Aston Martins are the answer.......mmm

I don't know why people go to all the expense of a Ferrari, when they could buy a badge for a few pence......

I wasn't too surprised when you mentioned how reliable your Astons were, I think the 20 years or so of Ford ownership and development of the brand especially DB7 and DB9 helped immensely with reliability.

I suspect for every reliable Ferrari Porsche or other high end sports/GT car one cares to think of, there seem likely to be a considerably higher proportion of the marque that suffer from issues...?

I suspect Ferrari`s more than Porsches might be case, in that more Porsches than Ferrari`s will likely be used as daily transport, and therin lies the key to my line of thought. I suspect the initial design of a road car, is that it will perform as such and with some regularity of use, as opposed to it suffering lengthy periods of storage...?

One has only to look at the discussions on marque forums as Spring arrives, to read of all the issues that have potential to come to light...?

For every sports car owner who is financially comfortable, I suspect there is a far higher percentage who are restricted in their ability to run their sports car regularly, let alone maintain it as it`s manufacturers had intended..?

I suspect there are all different types of true automotive enthusiasts out there who for their own reasons will pitch one marque against another, such is human nature is it not..? Also if you care to add a bit of envy to expectations on behaviour, then the outcomes seem ..err...logical..?

Me..? Despite my obvious small appendage, I am a true CARsonova... Sports cars are my thing..(-:

As ever, each to their own.I hope you can enjoy that which you have, large or small in cubic capacity or otherwise..(-:

I asked AI for some input into the modern Ferrari vs Porsche reliability debate and unsurprisingly it came back with this.

A modern Porsche is generally more reliable and practical for daily driving than a modern Ferrari. While Ferrari has significantly improved its build quality from the 458 Italia onwards, Porsche consistently ranks among the top luxury brands for long-term dependability and lower maintenance costs.

Reliability Comparison

Porsche (Higher Reliability): Porsche is renowned for precision engineering, often delivering vehicles that can handle daily commuting and intense track use without major failures. Models like the 911 are considered everyday supercars, frequently exceeding 100,000 miles.

Ferrari (High Performance/Variable Reliability): Modern Ferraris (post-2010s) are far more reliable than their predecessors, but they remain high-strung, hand-manufactured machines that require more frequent and expensive servicing. They are more sensitive to high mileage and often treated as "weekend cars," which can lead to issues if they sit idle.

Key Ownership Differences
Maintenance Costs: Porsche generally offers lower maintenance costs compared to Ferrari, which requires specialized parts and major service intervals.
Daily Usability: Porsche is designed for usability, with better cargo space and more compliant suspension for street use. Ferraris, while usable, are stiffer and have lower clearance.
Service & Parts: Porsche provides a more efficient service network, whereas Ferrari repairs can take longer if parts must be ordered from Italy.
Value Retention: Both brands hold value well, but Porsche models are often easier to sell due to their broader appeal as practical daily drivers.

Summary

If your priority is a "bulletproof" exotic that you can drive every day and track on weekends, Porsche is the better choice. If your priority is extreme performance, prestige, and theater, and you have the budget to handle expensive, specialized maintenance, a Ferrari is suitable, especially with a warranty.

John, seems A.I. may have consulted me... (-:

I think a reasonable degree off reality requires to be applied on the assessment of affordability in terms of maintenance and repairs, there are many who push their finances to own and run a 10 year old or older Porsche, many of whom will seek out a less expensive way of doing so other than having servicing repairs or buying parts from official manufacturers agents and on that score Porsche is well ahead of Ferrari and others of a similar ilk, given the number of independent experts many of whom will have been Porsche trained in garages specialising in all things Porsche. Likewise the parts network as there once again are numerous Porsche parts suppliers of original or pattern parts which can cut the cost of servicing, repairs or even restoring an older Porsche right back to the era of the 356...

In the 70`s when I was nailing my old rot box of a 912 back together to drag it screaming through an MOT (things were simpler back then) The local Porsche dealer had just taken on the Ferrari franchise when I asked the storeman what effect it had on his job.... The look on his face said it all.... They had a Ferrari in for a repair, where someone trying to steal it had ripped the door lock out of the door to get access..! The storeman ordered a door skin from Italy, when it arrived, his description was it would take a degree of skilled metalwork to make it come anywhere near close to fitting, He then just ordered a new door, it had similar issues relating to fit...! Ultimately they repaired the original damage to the door to get the job done...!

On the other hand were I ever financially able to think I could comfortably own a Ferrari, (which I have never been) all things considered, I would jump in with both feet and just as I did with my Morgan when I changed out of Porsche ownership, I would accept whatever foibles came with the car during my ownership. The automotive world and enthusiasts such as I are grateful that such wonderful machines the likes of Ferrari exist, for a multitude of reasons....

Perhaps best to remember there are a great many Porsches out there being run on a shoestring, and can cost more than their market value to repair were one be seduced by the idea that they are carved from the solid, They can be real money pits...Don`t ask me how I know... (-:
