Keith, I tried WD 40.without success. I was hoping that I could get it working and I am not even from Yorkshire.

does it work on brake switches though? No - Servisol is what you need.

quick update:having found a site that stocks them and ordered three !!!!! I decided to take the switch apart and got it working again. The plunger was stuck . Given its location it is not surprising. The smell of burning must have been a red herring - jokes pending I guess. Nevertheless thanks again for all the replies.
