If you ever come up behind an old car on the M way in the dark,or poor visibility, the rear lights can be pitiful. If you break down on the M way, or a dark lane and can't keep the lights on, all you've got without reflective plates is the two small reflectors. It's risky enough on the hard shoulder as it is. Reflective plates add a significant extra area of reflected light, and I would not fit black & silver plates for that reason alone. It's a reason to get stopped, and it's a reason for your insurance company to argue the toss. End of sermon!  Can't argue with your logic but how far do you apply it? I mean why drive a small car (never mind a Mog) when you can drive a nice massive modern one.....

It's a balance between acceptable and perceived risk. We all do this when it comes to car buying. But the number plate thing differs in that it's also a date specific legal requirement, so really it isn't optional anyway.

Why not make an adaptor, with the Black/Silver plate fixed for Shows and meetings, then the adaptor to afix the regular plates over the top of the B/S for road use

But the number plate thing differs in that it's also a date specific legal requirement, so really it isn't optional anyway. Ah, but if your post had said "it's illegal and we all really should follow the law" then I would agree with you, but you didn't, you opined it was a safety issue  I will accept the balance of acceptable risk, maybe if I were in an old car I may defer but I'm in a 2010 with all that brings with it

I want to be seen on the odd occasion Im on the road in the dark, so for me it's safety more than legality. done over a hundred miles this morning, and it's surprising how many old farts can't see a bright red Mog in daylight.

It would seem red may be one of the hardest colours to see... Or maybe it's because red cars are driven harder??

[/quote] Agree totally but I was a biker for many years and I have several friends who live life in wheelchairs 'cos of accidents where they weren't visible ( God save nme from Volvo estates, school runs, kids and labradors!) So, forgive me if I'm a bit touchy about this. For myself, I certainly don't worry about it when I take my car out and I drive for fun - including pushing it as had as I can- but I do think that uneccessary, objective risk is a tad silly regards G

We have two friends that had one back over them as they took an off ramp. The TIR was backing down the ramp because he had missed a turn into the lorry park. He didn't even feel the bump and it was only when one of them started banging on his door that he stopped (just before running over the one trapped underneath). They were on motorbikes and I don't think reflective plates were much help to them either. Fortunately no serious injuries but the two bikes were destroyed. Took 4 years to get the insurance payout. Edit: despite one hell of a fright they are both still riding motorbikes.
