Hi

Other than by talking the cam belt off my 1996, 1800 ford zetec engined car and taking it to a parts garage can anyone point me to where/how I can be sure I am buying the right one? It seems to have caused some confusion.

Have you checked th belt itslf to see if any srerial number is still vislible? if not,any outfit which is switched on to Morgans should be able to cross- reference the appropriate belt number. EG ( and without plugging in any way,) if Millers are near you, try them.
If it were me, I'd make sure the belt was a 'Gates'- I've found them much the best of what's available

PS are you changing the auxiliary belt at the same time?

Hi and thanks for coming back. The plan was to do the tensior and guide pulleys. The water pump would be logical but I am not sure teh only issue is the age. I was not aware of an auxillary belt

I have only had the car about a month and just want to get all to a known fixed point in time

That was exactly the stance I took with mine. My 4/4 is a late 2000 car and when I acquired it had done only minimal miles so I wanted to have a 'clean sheet'
I did the tensioner and guide pulleya at the same time but we took a good look at the WP and that looked fine ( On the other hand, I suppose with my OCD tendencies, I could have changed that while it was apart
Sorry if I was confusing by referring to 'auxiliary belt' - I just meant the alternator pulley etc belt

One other thing I did: I'd noticed on a lot of cars that the bottom crank pulley ( which of course is totally exposed and very near the road surface) gets extremely rusty, sowhile I had the belt off I cleaned it up and painted it. Looks lot better now
