I took shopping trolley (Subaru Justy 4x4)to have winter tyres fitted and was struck by the suspension system used on the rear axle.

The Justy has a rear differential and drum brakes, similar to the Morgan, but uses a coil suspension system on trailing arms with a panhard rod.

It made me wonder how such a system might work on a Morgan.

I'm with Nick and Jay on this.
For me the beauty of the Trad Morgans are the period chassis and build techniques (with all their foibles) coupled to reasonably reliable modern engines. The further you go down the bonded chassis and twin wishbone coil over damper set ups the less period feel of the driving experience, and the greater the similarity to the daily drive tin top. For anyone who wants the bonded chassis setup there are always the Plus 8, Aero and Lotus models surely?

I like my mog to be what it is a 1986 . Thats the reason I purchased it I got sick of the modern cars I owned doing everything for me to the point my driving became less and less I was so bored it dropped to less than 3000 mile in a year . If I go all mod on the mog then I am stepping forward and away from why it was purchased in the first place . Can't wait till spring to get back behind the wheel.

I very rarely post "+1". But Jay's view is just about word-for-word my own.

I think that, to a fair degree, it would be possible to have your cake and eat it too. There is no reason why a Morgan with a traditional chassis could not have a better front suspension (as discussed in other threads)and a slight modification of the rear part of the chassis could allow coil springs at the rear. The Subaru in the photo is set for comfort on rough roads but different springs and shock could adapt a similar design for a more sporty ride.

My 7,000 mile 2008 4/4 is starting to seriously sag on the rear driver's side (I obviously need to go on a diet!).

What needs to be done? Is it possible to sort out just the drivers side as the passenger side is fine or do they have to be done in pairs? Finally, is this a big/expensive job?

They should be done in pairs. But in my experience, no two leaf springs are ever the same. Don't throw the old ones away because in the past I've had to mix'n'match to get a matched pair. Sometimes splitting leaves to get a good match.

As I am mechanicaly incompetent I will be getting a professional to do it.

As my nearest Morgan dealer is a way off can a local garage do it or would it have to be a main dealer do you think?
