Some images from my iPhone from Monday and the snowfall in Melton Mowbray.

As my car is my daily driver, I have had some fun over the last few days. For a rear drive car it's actually rather good with snow, just be gentle!

Jeremy are you used to driving in the snow?

The biggest issue over here is that many people don't actually have the chance to practice in snow-driving and therefore, 'freeze' (no pun intended) when things start to go wrong.

Yes, I suppose. Back when I was 17 and learning to drive, we lived quite high up on Cannock Chase. The family Austin Maxi was the only Maxi in the Midlands with snow chains! Driving on unsurfaced roads in America, Canada and Australia has probably also helped, as there is some similarity with loose gravel and snow.

I have seen too many people driving too fast and too roughly over the last week. There's a nice thread on LR4x4.com, "You are NOT a God, Just because you drive a 4x4", which can be summed up with the old Star Trek line, "You canna break the Laws of Physics!".

My old 4/4 has, the then fashionable, narrow tyres, long travel throttle and not much power, (120bhp at best). I saw a 2CV on Thursday scooting along quite happily, perfect for snow, front wheel drive, low power, large wheels and very narrow tyres.

My neighbour's big modern Alpina was practically undrivable, big V8, auto, wide tyres and electronics without a clue about low friction surfaces at low speed.

In my late teens and early twenties I was either in an MG Midget or BGT. Both were excellent in snow for the reasons given in Jeremy's post. Not much power and skinny tall tyres. What helped was that I had no fear either of my own mortality or of getting stuck. At that time I had a 50 mile round commute from South Yorks to Chesterfield with a short stretch of M18/M1 involved. I always got to work no matter how bad it was, and can remenber jacknifed lorries and cars in ditches etc etc. The 2CV is renowned for it's abilities in snow. I once had a Mini with ten inch knobblies on the front, and that too was great in snow. Those were the days.

I lived in Bavaria in from 86-89. I had an Audi Coupe & the an 80S.

I had snow tyres and as stated above they were always the narrowest possible for the car to allow them to grip.

My current Mercedes C220CDI has 225 & 245s. It is horrible in snow.

I admire your bravado and I'm not referring to the snow. My car is an '86 and the chassis is not galvanised. I daren't take it out because of the salt that's everywhere. You got any special treatment sealing yours?

My car was rebuilt with a galvanised chassis and a lot of stainless steel bolts. Nevertheless, once the Land Rover is finished, the Morgan will come off the road for a thorough clean and hopefully new paint and chrome. It's 12 years since it was last rebuilt, so I think that time has come again.
