Reminds me of not many years ago (2009 from memory) over to France and a drive up to the Kiel-Gothenburg ferry for a meeting with my buddy and colleague Lars Carlsson at Volvo, then up to the Stromstad area, across to the Glass area and down to Simrishamn, from there we drove over the bridges and down through Denmark and eventually on to Calais. Wonderful holiday, we lost Lars to Motor Neurone Disease.....still hurts, several on here knew him, diamond geezer!

No, but he would have claimed it in exchange for a beer if he had thought of it ;-), Lars (Lasse) was one of many Carlssons at the Gothenburg plant, just in training we had 5 with the same name, he used to tell me with a surname like Jones I had nothing to comment about. He was initially a technician, then joined Volvo Cars in the training school and ended up the top technical guy in training, we started with a team of 6 in Competence Development and finished with just the two of us covering the planet....we still found time for Morgan Holidays and many, many nights of Mariestad and Pytt I Panna ;-)

Now I think about it, my memory suggests that the chap I knew was called Per Carlsson. I met him on a Volvo launch in the French Alps, and part of the trip was an afternoon playing around on an ice track, which was going to end with a time trial.

I had had a go, getting inevitably sideways but trying to keep it tidy and to avoid contact with the snow bank at the outside.

Per Carlsson, if that was his name, had watched me and said he would show me how to do it properly. He drove a couple of laps and then I followed his instructions. He was an excellent teacher. I began sliding wider, intentionally contacting the snow bank with the tail, taking off the corrective lock just before the gentle impact, keeping as much throttle as possible and then gradually straightening up before the next bend.

He said, "Hey, you're going to win this!" I wasn't sure about that but I felt far more confident.

Then it turned out that the time trial was to be in the much smaller 360 rather than the 740 that we had been using. I spun at the second corner!

I really liked those big Volvos. A lot of journalists dismissed them as "boring" but they were not at all. You could hold them in big slides and not lose it and they did more or less the same thing whatever the conditions.
