Mass Airflow Meter sensor. Unlike carbs which mix fuel/air at point of entry into cylinder, Injection systems 'split it up'
Unlike a carb, the throttle body does not regulate any fuel flow - this function being performed by the fuel injectors in the plenum. So the so-called 'throttle' pedal isn't controlling fuel but air.
You floor the throttle, the MAF sensor tells the EMU how much air is going in and it( the EMU) then sends a message to the fuel injectors which make sure there is enough fuel let loose to give the correct mixture. On the other, ie exhaust side, of things, the Lamda sensor located in the exhaust pipe then sends messages to the EMU telling it whether the exhaust side has too many emissions
