Happened to me years ago about 150 miles from home. Drove home using second and fourth, too risky using first and third as it was too easy to select reverse.

Not much traffic so wasn't a real problem although might have been if I'd forgotten the gear lever had morphed into a pudding stirrer!

Plastic threads stripped on my 1600E just outside Antibes in 1980 whilst going for 3rd, leaving gear lever in hand and not in box.

We tied it into the top of the extension housing using a boot lace and it lasted the whole 2 week holiday and got us back to Leeds.

Just had to be careful not to hit reverse instead of 1st.
